One of the most unusual hits of all time was a French-language ballad of the thirteenth-century Spanish priest Domingo de Guzmán, who preached the Gospel from the Baltic to the Mediterranean, served as a diplomat, and fought in the Albigensian Crusade, a war to suppress a heretical sect. Incredibly, this tune flew past all the songs about love, dancing, surfing and hot rods to land at the top of the charts, where it sat for four weeks at the end of 1963.

Very early teen when this came out. I remember us kids beating the heck out of each other in the front yard while this song blasted from a bedroom window.

This instrumental rocker by a group from Santa Monica, Calif. is unusual in that it features a
güiro, a percussion instrument made from a gourd, that comes from Central America. It charted in the early spring of 1961.
