Ron DeSantis just gave his first 2024 speech
CNN ^ | January 12, 2022 | Chris Cillizza

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is widely being discussed as a potential 2024 candidate for Republicans -- and he's doing little to knock down that chatter. And, his state of the state speech on Tuesday gave us all a preview of how DeSantis would run if he runs.

"Florida has become the escape hatch for those chafing under authoritarian, arbitrary and seemingly never-ending mandates and restrictions," DeSantis said, adding that Florida was now "the freest state in these United States."

DeSantis repeatedly touted his willingness to buck so-called conventional wisdom during his first term -- particularly when it came to dealing with the spread of Covid-19 in his state. DeSantis made mention of his decision to re-open Florida schools fully in the fall of 2020.

"We were right and they were wrong," DeSantis said, in what could easily double for a presidential campaign if/when he runs.

And, make no mistake: What DeSantis was doing in his speech was positioning himself for just such a run. Which feels like a natural next step from the first three years of DeSantis' time as governor; he has used his position to not only differentiate himself on Covid-19 mandates (and masking) but play directly into the arms of the Donald Trump base of the party -- on everything from "woke" culture in education to restrictive voting rights in the state.

Trump is taking notice of DeSantis' jockeying.

Military service in Iraq is a liability for a lot of us here on FR.

How? They were ordered to deploy and they did. They served with honor. That should not be a liability for military personnel who did so.

Agreed. Desantis is fight for his constituents. Trumps latest comments on the vaccine shows he’s lost touch in this battle for freedom.

Any more than we give a f_ck about your voting history or intentions. Vote for who you want.

I don’t remember anyone anointing you as the expert on conservatism (other than yourself).

You certainly have zero right to discuss anything military.

Just want to say I appreciate your service. A couple of observations.

Being in the military 40, 30, 20, even 10 years ago is likely not the same as it is today. Too many changes. Not sure you would like todays military.

One thing I have noticed over the years is that former military people have a very can do attitude (overconfidence) that borders on a reckless lack of caution. It is like they think they can do things with limited reflection. Many times it is not, I will look at it and get back to you with any questions but just plowing through and one has to sort through the work product to discover hidden problems.

Do you think this guy would get the same defenders here on FR? LOL.

I never said I was.

You sound like a DNC operative, or Lizard Cheney. Who the hell are you to make that determination?

I wouldn’t criticize him for his military service. I just think he’s an execrable human being and politician.

To me, his military service is a small plus, outweighed by the tsunami of negative features of his person and politics.

Fair enough. I’m not a huge fan of DeSantis right now but the GOP could do a hell of a lot worse.

My one word of caution to everyone on FR is that he would be an establishment Republican from top to bottom in Washington D.C. Let’s have no illusions about that.

Another thing that shouldn’t be swept under the rug is Trump’s numerous, sh*tty cabinet/administrative picks! He appointed Swamp members to help “drain the Swamp!”🙄

Trump never learned who his enemies were.

How quickly we forget….running a state is VERY different than dealing with every gov dept full of snakes. DeSantis has done a wonderful job in FL.

Before making shallow decisions, review his actions (inactions) during the Benghazi fiasco. I remember seeing him on Fox many times with other reps and DeSantis always struck me as lackluster.

The true test is not how Trump acts but how he endured hell. No other politician has been attacked in every way nor would they have survived. If DeSantis is attacked the same way: Will he fold or make secret deals?

All I know is that he did not go after Hillary like Chaffetz and Chaffetz could have done much better. Focus on how DeSantis performed in Congress, then compare that to Gaetz. Not even close.

Trump was a horrible judge of who his enemies were! Explain his choices of Sessions and Barr as AGs? I’m all ears!

Trump couldn’t seem to figure out who members of the Swamp were.

DeSantis an establishment Replublican? Never heard that anywhere, before. Typically, he’s known more for things like this:

Trump’s GOP ‘warriors’ lead charge against Mueller

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/05/07/trump-mueller-republican-warriors-congress-571562

President Donald Trump calls them his “warriors”: a band of four House Republicans defending Trump with a relentless counterattack against the Justice Department’s Russia investigation that thrills the president even as it unsettles some House GOP colleagues who think they’re going too far.

This crew of hard-charging conservatives, whom Trump singled out by name in late April, have emerged as some of Washington’s most prominent Republicans, enjoying direct lines to the Trump White House and flights on Air Force One.

“Look, we have some absolute warriors,” Trump told Fox News on April 26 when asked about his relationship with Congress, name-checking “Jim Jordan and Mark Meadows and Matt Gaetz and [Ron] DeSantis.”

None of the four holds a powerful committee chairmanship, but they have something just as important: regular airtime on Fox News. And their pressure campaign against the Justice Department and FBI has put Mueller’s boss, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on the defensive.

The 39-year-old DeSantis, who last week called for criminal investigations of former FBI director James Comey and his former deputy Andrew McCabe, won Trump’s early endorsement in Florida’s contested GOP primary for governor. He has also proposed cutting off funding for Mueller’s investigation.

“There’s something about a political figure who has never worked a real job in his life that I find highly off-putting as a voter.”

I guess being a JAG attorney and representing the Navy Seals is not a (real) job.

““Trump/DeSantis ticket ok by me.

Trump would only be one term.”

I fully agree.”

4 years of Trump and 8 of DeSantis would be ideal.

“ Trump was a horrible judge of who his enemies were!”

———————————————————-

What exactly is your point? Yes, many that worked for and with Trump were enemies. As a matter of fact, all of gov, media and fellow Republicans were enemies. I’m not sure there are enough good people in DC to fill a cabinet.

Is that Trump’s fault? Half the people here thought most Republicans were good meek people until they openly tried to sabotage Trump. Blame Trump for choosing snakes from a snake pit but the conversation here is about DeSantis. Who do you think DeSantis would hire considering he would be choosing from the same snake pit?

Some here can’t see past the end of their shoes. They get the best president we have ever had, he grew the base substantially, he gave us an America First platform and he exposed the rot. 2 yrs later and many here are playing armchair quarterback thinking things can be better with an ‘unproven’ candidate. DeSantis was meek in Congress, much like Meadows, Chaffetz, Gowdy, Cruz etc etc. When attacked, republicans squirm and shut their mouth. I thought we were all sick of that behavior……..guess not.

I voted for Trump twice, and I’d vote for him again, but I’m not going to sit here and pretend that everything he did was wonderful! If he does run again, and if he wins, he had better damn well learn who his enemies are, and who the card carrying members of the swamp are! Please tell me what AG Barr did in regards to the rampant voter fraud/cheating in the 2020 Presidential election? If Barr had done his job, we might not be where we’re at now! His two AG picks were sh*t! If these two, and other Swamp/Establishment picks weren’t his, then who in the Hell was advising him? Sorry, but Trump was not able to see who his enemy was, and who the members of the swamp were, and that’s a fact! Why didn’t he fire, and repopulate various agencies with his own people? He let the swamp creatures keep their positions, where they constantly undermined him and his policies!

Trump was also, IMO, responsible for the glorification of Fauci at those ridiculous daily Covid 19 pressers! He came out everyday praising Fauci as one of America’s great scientists, and other nauseating platitudes! It’s really hard to be critical of someone, after you’ve spend months and months praising them!

AS I said, I’ll vote for Trump if he runs again, but hopefully he’s spent some time learning who the Swamp, Establishment, and RINO’s are. And hopefully he gets a new advisor and bans Ivanka and Jared from any assistance in policy decisions!
