Ron DeSantis just gave his first 2024 speech
CNN ^ | January 12, 2022 | Chris Cillizza

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is widely being discussed as a potential 2024 candidate for Republicans -- and he's doing little to knock down that chatter. And, his state of the state speech on Tuesday gave us all a preview of how DeSantis would run if he runs.

"Florida has become the escape hatch for those chafing under authoritarian, arbitrary and seemingly never-ending mandates and restrictions," DeSantis said, adding that Florida was now "the freest state in these United States."

DeSantis repeatedly touted his willingness to buck so-called conventional wisdom during his first term -- particularly when it came to dealing with the spread of Covid-19 in his state. DeSantis made mention of his decision to re-open Florida schools fully in the fall of 2020.

"We were right and they were wrong," DeSantis said, in what could easily double for a presidential campaign if/when he runs.

And, make no mistake: What DeSantis was doing in his speech was positioning himself for just such a run. Which feels like a natural next step from the first three years of DeSantis' time as governor; he has used his position to not only differentiate himself on Covid-19 mandates (and masking) but play directly into the arms of the Donald Trump base of the party -- on everything from "woke" culture in education to restrictive voting rights in the state.

[cut]

Trump is taking notice of DeSantis' jockeying.

He’d better be ready for it. It will happen. They’ll make it up and hire fake witnesses.

I’m very bothered by his vaccine stance and his attacks against DeSantis were not smart.

Aside from my extreme dislike of Biden, I always thought he was too damned old to be POTUS and his behavior is proving that.

I voted for DJT both times. BUT in 2024, he will be the same age as Biden. I am of the opinion that he will also be too old for the job.

I think Desantis is the man.

“Trump’s picks were bad, he should have picked his own people as opposed to swamp creatures” (Summarized)

—————————————

I agree. My previous posts states as much. BUT - my assessment is this, the RINOS that have to vote for cabinet members have the real power. There are no good candidates to choose from. You’re assuming that the lifelong bureaucracy has decent people available. 99% of those working in DC are corrupt. 99% of Republicans in DC are democrat sympathizers.

I don’t think Trump had any great people in his orbit including Pompeo. Pompeo did nothing to fix (clean out) the CIA and state dept. Add Meadows and Pence to that list as well. But I also know why he made some of the choices he did - everyone was attacking him on every level starting 2015. And many republican voters were blind. He needed Pence because Christians weren’t onboard. He hired family (democrats) because no one could be trusted. Bush league voters thought Trump wasn’t conservative enough. Etc etc etc.

Where we disagree is that they are good choices to make. You believe there are good advisors and good effective people to choose for these highly political positions. I disagree. Only swamp creatures can live in a swamp. Good ethical people are weeded out long before they make it to DC. I’m still surprised the secret service didn’t allow him to be harmed or shot.

In summary, those that think any candidate (DeSantis or others) will have ‘good’ people to choose from……..well - tell me who these ‘good’ people would be.

There are none.

As for me ‘pretending’ everything Trump did was great - nonsense. I was happy Trump survived. Troubleshooting his term is great but not accurate if one ignores the circumstances at the time. Most Republican voters had no clue how swampy DC is. Had they known, no candidate would have had support - but they did (Bush, Rubio, Paul, Cruz etc etc) and still do (shocking). They are all swamp creatures except Carson and Trump. Even Carson couldn’t clean up his dept despite his desire to do so.

In summary, Trump may know who is swampy but asking that all be primaried or fired leaves no one. I want all of them primaried. And the voters spend more time sitting on the couch armchair quarterbacking instead of making sure most of the Republicans in DC are primaried. And this has been true since 2015. Voters did nothing, they wanted Trump to do it all. So yes, Trump’s picks were awful and ineffective.

And if one still thinks 99% of Republicans aren’t swampy - Why is Rand Paul the only one decrying Fauci? Well, let’s look at history - every time this stuff happens, one Republican or a few sound off while the others stay quiet. It’s never a group effort as a party, it’s a select few. This happened with Hillary, Russia, Benghazi, Obamacare, Hunter’s laptop, Impeachment, Biden, BLM etc etc etc. They bark during election time or campaign funds and ultimately do nothing. Meanwhile, voters still think current politicians might be a better president than Trump - ha ha ha ha. The only way is if they could fight harder than Trump and I haven’t seen that from ANY of them. They have had many opportunities to fight and did not. DeSantis did not while in Congress but is able to in FL. I like DeSantis but I was not impressed with him in Congress. Check out his Fox appearances during Benghazi. Gowdy was the fighter (fake) then. Had DeSantis had courage, he could have outdone Gowdy but he didn’t. He was following swamp rules. I suspect that’s why he went to FL. And he does well there. Based on his appearances on Fox etc, I was concerned when he was elected in FL. Thankfully, I was wrong. Again, running a state is much easier than being in DC. DC requires unending courage and strength….and many don’t have that. They care more about being re-elected than fighting.

Agree, with Kal. Keep up the heat. It takes a big person to back it down and just say, “I may have missed the mark on this one”. I don’t think the Canadian fits this.

I’d like to see Trump jail the swamp creatures first.

Well.. that would've been greatly helpful in 2017... he didn't even have them removed from office... that one still boggles the mind.

DeSantis would be my first choice for 2024. He has a provable record of executive-office success, plus he, like Trump, fears no one.

Thanks again for your thoughts! I think we agree on more things than disagree!

Peace!

“Cruz was always unlikable. RDS is not unlikable.”

That much is true, but comparing 2016 and 2024 is silly.

In 2016, President Trump had to fight his way to the top and Cruz got in the way.

In 2024 President Trump will be so far on top it’s not even funny - RDS understands that and won’t get in the way. He has said as much whenever asked.

“People are quite done with the stolen election, the vaccine, the mandates and are ready to be hopeful now.”

People are quite done with those things - but not the way you mean. The stolen election, the China virus and the mandates - and add to that the nonstop impeachment witch hunts - people are quite done putting up with it - but there was massive brainwashing that needs to be undone - people aren’t done setting the record straight - they want justice - they want payback.

We have a choice: either President Trump leads his America First movement toward a permanent tectonic shift in geopolitics - or someone else leads the Republican Party back to the same old shit.

I choose door number one, and a huge part of it is unraveling all the lies and setting the record straight - there has to be some justice or it’s just politics as usual.

A big Trump come-back is the only way to make things right after all the dishonesty of the last five years. Even if it is symbolic, i.e., after a year Trump steps down and rides off into the sunset - if that’s what he wants, that’s ok with me.

The Left needs a humiliating failure right about now, and putting President Trump back in the White House is the perfect way - perhaps the only way - to crush their spirit.

Trump is a vicious fighter we need.

When was Trump ever a vicious fighter? He spent most of his "fighting" as president complaining on Twitter about how unfairly he was being treated.

What are you talking about? Silly? What?

I responded to someone comparing Trump v Cruz and Trump RDS

Trump is out there promoting vaccines. RDS is shutting down mandates- actively

Trump can’t go up against that by calling RDS names.

What I also said was that Trump had a couple of days to get this right bc people at that rally last night were not going to stand for it. They are sick of what Tge mandates are doing

Lo and behold, Trump practically stammered through the subject. Mentioned Tge word vaccine once, it was going to burn a hole in his tongue. And if was way after The mandates subject. RDS came out just two days ago on the very correct side of vaccines and mandates.

I was saying it’s silly to compare the two elections - Trump was a newcomer in 2016, and in 2024 he is anything but.

I agree with what you said about Cruz being unlikable and DeSantis likable.

I just don’t think likability/unlikability of the two Trump alternatives is what sets the two elections apart - what sets them apart is that for 2024, Trump doesn’t need to fight his way to the top - he already has the nomination locked up if he wants it.

As for Trump’s speech - he did great and didn’t stammer through anything.

Defending the fake vaccines is a mistake - but a small one - it’s not going to be Trump’s undoing as long as he remains firmly against mandates - which he clearly is.

The dude went from Harvard Law School to a JAG post in the U.S. military

A JAG post as senior legal advisor to SEAL team captain Dane Thorleifson, Commander, Special Operations Task Force-West in Fallujah, Iraq during 2007, the most deadliest year of the war.

You dismiss DeSantis' military service as if he had a cushy desk job stateside. He didn't. He was in the sh*t.

Please stop calling people silly especially when you dig a hole trying to explain.

“ I just don’t think likability/unlikability of the two Trump alternatives is what sets the two elections apart”

I wasn’t even talking about this or anything you are talking about

“ doesn’t need to fight his way to the top - he already has the nomination locked up if he wants it.”

Says you.

Since when? Or would it be “silly” to ask

At the end of the day he was still just a lawyer.

He was awarded a Bronze Star. Have you ever come across any information about the circumstances behind that?

Call me cynical, but I’ve seen this sh!t before.
