As the nation marked a year since the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol, Sen. Rob Portman said this to cleveland.com reporter Sabrina Eaton: “We need to seek places where we can find that common ground to begin to rebuild the sense of American consensus.”

Yes, we need to find that common American ground again. Ohio, in particular, needs to recapture its patriotic consensus.

That is why, Sen. Portman, if you are serious about wanting to rebuild our “American consensus,” we ask that you reconsider your retirement and seek a third term in the U.S. Senate.

Otherwise, the ugliness that is the Republican primary for your seat will continue its cavalcade of intemperate, cruel, ill-judged, narrow-minded and explosive rhetoric designed to divide not unite. Otherwise, the majority of candidates from your party will continue to spew their lies about the 2020 election, lies that don’t just bust apart hopes to rebuild any consensus in America, but also that continue to shred the very heart and soul of the traditional conservative Republican Party values you have served so ably over your long career of public service.

It’s true that not all Republican contenders for your seat have taken a destructive tack. State Sen. Matt Dolan of Chagrin Falls has staked out a patriotic high road of rationality, probity, honesty and restraint. He would serve ably. But he has never run statewide. And in the maelstrom of this nasty campaign, will his sober, reasoned, reasonable voice even be heard?

I bet EVERY member of this editorial board voted for the Democrat in Portman's last two elections.

And I bet they will be voting for the Democrat in November.

But Ohio is turning irretrievably red, so they want to keep their Democrat helpmate in the Senate, and keep a scary conservative out.

Portman is one of the RINO/Swamp/Corporate DC GOP wheels. With his years basking in the swamp, I’m sure his family is now set up like Rockefellers. Hopefully he primaried over to K street.

You don’t win every battle in a war, if we lose the Ohio Senate Seat, that’s bad, what’s really bad is keep electing the same type of Republicans and expecting a different outcome, that’s the classic definition of insanity.

He probably realizes it's impossible to find consensus in the Congress today.

What’s a bigger nightmare, keep electing establishment Republicans who screw you without a cigarette afterwards or risk electing a democrat over a firebrand Republicans

I heard a saying recently that said, Scared Money don’t make money,, I think it’s appropriate in this case

Portman is the perfect example of a central casting useful idiot that has “managed and compromised” this country to its current desperate condition.
