Leading British and US scientists thought it was likely that Covid accidentally leaked from a laboratory but were concerned that further debate would harm science in China, emails show.
An email from Sir Jeremy Farrar, director of the Wellcome Trust, on February 2 2020 said that “a likely explanation” was that Covid had rapidly evolved from a Sars-like virus inside human tissue in a low-security lab.
The email, to Dr Anthony Fauci and Dr Francis Collins of the US National Institutes of Health, went on to say that such evolution may have “accidentally created a virus primed for rapid transmission between humans”.
But a leading scientist told Sir Jeremy that “further debate would do unnecessary harm to science in general and science in China in particular”. Dr Collins, the former director of the US National Institutes of Health, warned it could damage “international harmony”.
Viscount Ridley, co-author of Viral: the search for the origin of Covid, said: “These emails show a lamentable lack of openness and transparency among Western scientists who appear to have been more interested in shutting down a hypothesis they thought was very plausible, for political reasons.”
The new details came to light after members of the US Republican House Oversight Committee were granted access to the documents, after complaining that their content had been heavily redacted when released under Freedom of Information requests.

Everyone is so concerned about poor China. Give me a break. They’re doing everything they can to steal from us, undermine us, and bribe our leaders. Why should we treat them like delicate porcelain dolls?

Whether or not to literally lie to preserve ‘international harmony’ was never Francis Collin’s, or any other scientist’s call to make. Further, one strongly wonders how much preserving ‘international harmony’ actually meant preventing Trump from reelection.
The scientific ‘community’ is NOT truly a community of scientists. It’s an international cabal of glad-handing self-promoting and self-preserving ‘established’ researchers who keep each other’s grant funding flowing and who too often suppress truth if it doesn’t fit their personal beliefs, politics, or their own research findings.
Ironically, when someone actually does ‘follow the science’, they find that the science is dishonest. It’s way past time to reform the entire research structure.
I’m not surprised in the least, but I am appalled.

China’s leadership always uses the terms of Peace and Harmony. But that’s what they want the world to think regarding their country and it’s leadership.

The use of the term ‘harmony’ is interesting because it sounds like he is just regurgitating a Chinese talking point.
Chinese bought traitors and propagandists, and they call themselves ‘scientists,’ go figure.
They all ‘international harmony’ driven up their collective arses.
Tariffs. Now. Do it. This will promote domestic industry and raise revenue. win - win.
The explanation for Covid is getting released in driblets. Among other things the Veritas DARPA letter just yesterday. The story that seems to be emerging is-
- The CDC through the NIH was stymied in conducting gain-of-function (GoF) research, as that was banned in the US in 2014.
- Therefore the CDC obtained the services of a contractor that would arrange for such research “hands off” - that is EcoHealth Alliance. The CDC/NIH couldn’t do it so they gave their contractor a grant to arrange for the work to be conducted elsewhere.
- EcoHealth Alliance arranged for the Chinese-government controlled Wuhan lab to conduct the GoF research.
- And the virus escaped from the Wuhan lab causing massive global consequences.
This whole thing, as the known documents indicate, was a case of willful negligence, not an act of God. People are talking about the US politics angle here. But that is short sighted. What everyone needs to fear is that, by eliminating the act of God assumption and the details of why the Wuhan lab created this virus, that the US has joined China in the liability exposure for Covid. All this death and suffering and economic damage is the fault of agencies of the US government, in large part, maybe the liability will be assigned, eventually, 50:50 with China.
The world (the largest ever class action maybe?), or any government, or even private individuals, would be able to sue the US and Chinese governments and demand compensation for documented losses as a result of their policies. The global losses, and so liabilities, we are talking about here are titanic, dozens of trillions. For the US we are looking for multi generational economy-wrecking debt.

When you mix science and politics, you just get bad science. That’s all we’ve had with the COVID panic that Democrats are fostering.
Crimes against humanity. Anyone that aided in this debacle needs to be taken down.
