Parts of New England to see extreme cold, closures this week

BOSTON (AP) — The New England states are bracing for extreme cold that is already closing some schools and threatening the power grid this week.

Boston, the state’s largest public school district, announced Monday that schools will not open Tuesday because of expected extremely cold temperatures.

The high in the city Tuesday is expected to be 12 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 11 C), with wind chills making it feel as low as minus 8 (minus 22 C), according to National Weather Service forecasters. It could feel as low as minus 15 (minus 26 C) in some areas of Massachusetts, according to the weather service.

And it could be even colder elsewhere in New England, as forecasters said wind chill could approach minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 40 C) in some parts of western Maine. Central Maine Power, the largest utility in the state, said it expects to see a rise in electricity usage on Tuesday because of the use of electric space heaters and fireplaces.

Low temperatures below zero, not including the wind chill, are also expected in Burlington, Vermont, and Concord, New Hampshire. Southern New England is unlikely to be spared, as forecasters said Providence, Rhode Island, should expect a wind chill value of as low as minus one degree Fahrenheit (minus 17 C).

Someone should pass the word that there are covid tests available for free somewhere. Perhaps we could get a bunch of liberals falling over waiting in the cold for their covid test kit.

“We’ve become a nation of pussies.”

No doubt. If the Chinese were to invade tomorrow they would be in control by the weekend.

When I was a kid the average temp this time of year was -50 and we had to walk. Kids of today have it so easy with global warming.

"Used to walk to school in those temps. No big deal."

It was a mile to my high school one way. Walked that distance and back every winter in Rochester, N.Y, from 8th grade until I graduated in 1965. Back then, girls couldn't wear slacks to school, so we were in dresses, and skirts and blouses every day. I was also on varsity cheer squad from 10th grade on, so had to go to every football and basketball game our varsity teams played on Saturdays, and after school.

Public schools are being closed, not for kid’s sake, but for their precious unionized teachers. Shameful slackers, all of them,

If this was a hot spell, it would be heralded as proof positive
of global warming.

Now it means nothing.

A few years back, my region was 5-15 degrees below the
average for the first six months of the year. Meant nothing.

Three days of hot weather, the sky is falling.

I grew up in Boston. I don’t remember school ever being cancelled on account of cold weather - and it got a lot colder than it is going to be there tomorrow.

Did I read that right? Threatening the power grid? Better re-address this off shore wind mills. Or not.

I’m old enough to remember a time when the stupid and absolutely meaningless “wind chill” had not been created AND we used American units (F) and did not put the damned metric units in parentheses.

I heard it is related to keeping windows open at school and circulating air due to Covid.
