Nearly Half of Omicron Cases in Houston Hospital System Among Vaccinated: Study

Nearly Half of Omicron Cases in Houston Hospital System Among Vaccinated: Study.

About half the Omicron cases in a major hospital system in Texas have been among the vaccinated, according to a new study funded in part by the U.S. government.

Researchers with Houston Methodist Hospital and other institutions performed genome sequencing of patients with COVID-19 in the Houston area and identified 862 people with symptoms whose infections were caused by Omicron, a variant of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus, or SARS-CoV-2. The infections were recorded from late November 2021 to Dec. 18, 2021.

Of the patients, 430 met the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) definition of a breakthrough case, or a COVID-19 case that occurs among vaccinated people.

Most of the patients, 299, received two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine; the rest received either a Moderna primary series or the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

The percentage of patients being vaccinated was much higher for Omicron than for the Alpha or Delta variants, researchers said.

The percentage jumped from 3.2 percent for Alpha to 24.1 percent for Delta to 49.9 percent for Omicron. All strains are labeled as variants of concern (VOCs) by the World Health Organization.

Additionally, the study found 85 patients who had gotten a booster dose but still contracted symptomatic COVID-19.

“Consistent with Omicron causing a significantly increased number of vaccine breakthrough cases, it has been reported that this variant has reduced sensitivity to antibody neutralization in vitro, likely in large part due to the extensive number of amino acid and other structural changes occurring in Omicron spike protein,” researchers wrote in the preprint study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed.

Dr. James Musser, with Houston Methodist’s Center for Infectious Diseases, led the work with colleagues and experts with the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York and the University of Chicago.

The study was funded by the Houston Methodist Academic Institute Infectious Diseases Fund, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and the Department of Health and Human Services.

“Several key findings were made, including (i) the Omicron VOC rapidly increased as a cause of COVID-19 and spread throughout the metroplex in an unusually short period of time, far faster than any other SARS-CoV-2 variant; (ii) Omicron caused significantly more vaccine breakthrough cases than the Alpha or Delta VOCs; (iii) Omicron patients were significantly younger than Alpha or Delta patients; (iv) significantly fewer Omicron patients required hospitalization compared to Alpha and Delta patients; (v) the median length of stay for hospitalized Omicron patients was significantly shorter than for Alpha and Delta patients, and consistent with this observation, the maximum respiratory support required for Omicron patients was significantly less than for Alpha or Delta patients,” researchers wrote.

Limitations included samples only being obtained from patients with symptoms and the majority of cases in the Houston region not being included.

David Usharauli, co-founder and director of Tregeutix and a former NIH scientist who was not involved with the research, wrote on Twitter that the study provided the “first direct evidence that #omicron infects unvaccinated and #vaccinated people similarly.”

“It is very different from both alpha and delta variants,” he said.

The CDC says breakthrough infections “are expected” but that fully vaccinated people who get infected are less likely to develop serious illness when compared to unvaccinated people.

Early studies on Omicron have signaled that primary vaccination series provide little protection against Omicron infection, though the vaccines have held up fairly well against severe disease, as has natural immunity, or the protection from COVID-19 recovery.

In another study out after the New Year, researchers with the NIH and health facilities in the Cleveland area also found evidence that Omicron is causing less severe illness by analyzing electronic health records from the TriNetX Analytics network.

Compared to patients with COVID-19 caused by Delta, patients with Omicron are less likely to go to the emergency room or require hospitalization, researchers said in the preprint paper..

First time SARS-CoV-2 infections occurring at a time when the Omicron variant was rapidly spreading were associated with significantly less severe outcomes than first-time infections when the Delta variant predominated,” they wrote.

Sweet vaccine.
Aren’t breakthrough cases supposed to be rare?

The vaccine-junkies are the super-spreaders.

“Aren’t breakthrough cases supposed to be rare?”

Not really. In this case most were with the new variant.

Besides, the vaccine does not stop you from getting an infection. Your immune system responds to the infection.

So how is it a vaccine?
Every vaccine I have ever taken prevents getting sick.

Cases not rare, serious cases rare. The vaccine helps you to fight off the disease when it enters your system. That’s why such an overwhelming percentage of the people dying are unvaccinated.

“Aren’t breakthrough cases supposed to be rare?”

Not with Delta or Omicron. Neither have the Alpha spike protein that the vaccines are built on.

“Every vaccine I have ever taken prevents getting sick.”

A vaccine boosts your immune system.

The immune system only reacts AFTER you become infected.

No infection, no immune system response.

Which is why we have never had a coronavirus vaccine ever before.
We also have zero knowledge of potential long term effects.
The world has outcomes devoid of intentions.
In long run we roll our dice and see what happens.
I don’t care if people take the vaccine, just don’t mandate it.

With a portion of the virus, not mRNA.
We rushed a new vaccine with a new method.
Mandating it before long term studies have been done is not wise.(IMHO)

You don't don't even recognize the cognitive dissonance in that statement, do you?

You clot-shot vaccine-junky Cat Ladies are hilarious!

Get more boosters, Cat Lady!

Looks like J&J did better than Pfizer...but I believe that’s because it was formulated with active variant info.

I’ve been saying for a while that exercise and salads were what Americans needed for the last two years.
