~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ New Year's Lucky Foods! Across the country and around the world, people celebrate the new year with a variety of foods, many of them thought to bring luck in the coming year.
From pork to peas to pastries, we can embrace different cultural culinary traditions in the hope of starting the new year off on the right foot. Here's a symbol of gold for your New Year's table: cornbread! Combine this Southern favorite with black-eyed peas and collard greens for triple the luck. Need some inspiration this year? Take a cue from pigs who are known to push forward as they eat. (And we want to move forward, not backward in the new year.) This is just one reason why pork is considered to be lucky on New Year's. Ensure good fortune this year by eating your greens—it's the color of money, after all! Collard greens are a Southern favorite, but you could also try kale, Swiss card, or any leafy green you could find. Black-eyed peas, which are actually a type of bean, are typically eaten on New Year's Day in the form of Hoppin' John (a simple stew), but they can also be made into a warm party dip, curry, or side dish for your New Year's meal. The shape of black-eyed peas is said to look like a coin which represents wealth—especially when combined with collard greens. What did you eat for New Years to bring good luck? FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT~Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allies military and the family members of the above. Honoring those who have served before.
Please remember: The Canteen is a place to honor and entertain our troops. The Canteen is family friendly. Let's have fun! We pray for your continued strength, to be strong in the face of adversity. We pray for your safety, that you will return to your families and friends soon. We pray that your hope, courage, and dignity remain unbroken, so that you may show others the way. God Bless You All ~ Today, Tomorrow and Always |

We had German sausage and black-eyed peas. I don’t like black-eyed peas, but after last year, who wants to take chances. LOL!

Hubby’s arthritis was really cranked up and he had no appetite to speak of, so I didn’t bother to cook. He grazed a little throughout the day. I had a home-made pimento cheese sandwich and some tomato bisque soup for supper.
I reckon we’re screwed this year. LOL

They have a weird flavor. I’d rather have red [pinto] beans. :)

Oh, I’m pretty sure your homemade pimento cheese is good luck. LOL! Sounds sooo much better than some of those “good luck” foods.
I hope your hubby is feeling better today.

Yo radu!
My New Year's weekend was college football and resting. Son was over last night for dinner and hanging and when I got up this morning I was snowed in.
Still ran a few errands in my SUV and now staying cozy and winding down for the night.

I don’t know about good luck but it was delicious. I took a tray of sandwiches to the new Year’s Eve party but kept enough cheese here for us to eat for a couple of days.
I don’t eat any of those “good luck” foods but Hubby does like black-eyed peas. I have some on hand but he wasn’t in the mood for them.
He’s feeling a little better today. He’s up and moving more than the past two days anyway. He had a bad sinus headache Friday on top of it all so it was a rough start to the new year for him.

Your weekend sounds a lot better than ours. I did go to a party Friday night and had a good time. The rest of the weekend was a bit of a drag. In less than two hours’ time, we had a tornado warning in the town just north of us, one for HERE (it missed us, fortunately), and one about 15 miles south of us.
Then 5 inches of snow dumped on us last night. It’s still there because we never got out of the 20s today. I had no reason to go anywhere so enjoyed the warmth of home.

EEUUWW! I can’t abide buttermilk. That nasty stuff on the side of the glass and the icky taste. I like my cornbread in the beans.
Now I’m hungry for red beans and cornbread. LOL!

I’ll bet everyone at the party enjoyed the pimento cheese. Good thing you left some back for yourself!
Is it still snowing there? It’s going to be 70 degrees here tomorrow. LOL!

They did enjoy the sandwiches. I brought none home. I always keep a little of the cheese for us to eat when I make the sandwiches for parties.
The snow stopped before I went to bed this morning. But with no sunshine and 28 degrees, there was very little melting today. Most of it is still there. BUT, they SAY we’ll have sunshine tomorrow and temps close to 50. That’ll take care of it if they’re correct.
Checking Adair’s Tweets earlier, I saw there was snow at Ft. Walton overnight. I had no idea it went that far south.

I had heard that parts of FL got snow. That really is crazy. Steve even said on his stream tonight that it was cold enough to close the balcony door. LOL! He hates the cold and is thinking of moving back to Boston. I think he’s missing family after this time of having to stay away. You can only be alone for so long without it eating on you.

This is what I make every New Year. It's an Italian tradition.
