More than 2.4 million COVID-19 cases have been recorded in the US in the past week – the most since the pandemic began, according to new data.
The new statistic beats out the previous record of just over the 2 million cases recorded almost exactly a year ago for the seven days between Dec. 26, 2020, through Jan. 1, 2021 — and comes amid the fast-paced spread of the highly-contagious Omicron variant, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

By now we ought to be the immune herd. The virus is now burning through the poked.
Probably about same chance as the original Covid virus released
that’s a doubling in two days
if we didn’t have a lockdown, the 3/4 million dead would be ten times that, but hey, the survivors, in whatever shape they survived with no medical help left alive, would have Delta immunity. Right? Except Omi defeats delta immunity. Maybe back to the drawing board on that idea, eh?
Thanks for that good post, with so much important information.
We are beginners at this, and can expect a lot more of it in the future. At least we were warned.
If you’re talking about me, I don’t consider my reaction to be an overreaction. I certainly don’t consider myself weak and fragile.
As I have written on this site before, I am not afraid of getting the disease myself and am not afraid to die. My strong interest in the subject comes from a public-health awareness that I have always had, having lived through the polio epidemic and been very interested in health and medicine along with the well-being of my country.
Local governments are an essential part of our lives. You can see how much NYC, where people are packed together and constrained by their work environments and travel limitations, differs from some small mountain town. Perhaps the only thing Blasio has done that has shown some guts if to clamp down on businesses and city agencies. I didn’t know he had it in him.
As one of the posters before me wrote, we have now let the disease kill off the weak, so it’s going to be a bit easier in the future. Aren’t we wonderful. Sixty-three percent vaccinated. Give us the Boy Scout Medal of Honor.
Omicron is super contagious but very mild. It has blown through my family, hubby’s business, church. People are catching it in large numbers but it is just a cold with a low grade fever, over in a few days with a lingering post-nasal drip tickle/cough. Mucinex has been helpful with this one!
Covid covid covid
Free Republic has progressed to Covid hell
FYI - was not talking about you personally but the overall collectivist mentality that I see with my neighbors here in the 6th Borough when I hear them discussing this and watching their behavior.
OK. I know I’m not speaking for everyone who is pro-vax.
Just had a long New Year’s Day talk with my oldest friend—we brought up our kids in this building where I still live—and she is 100% totally of the same mind as I am. What a refreshing talk that was
Hope you at least see a little of what I was talking about in my comment.
