Cruise company stocks had been holding up remarkably well in December despite concerns about Covid outbreaks on ships and the rapidly spreading Omicron variant. But that's no longer the case.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday that even vaccinated people should no longer take a cruise vacation. Shares of Carniva (CCL)l, Royal Caribbean (RCL) and Norwegian (NCLH) were each down about 1% to 2% Friday.
Carnival's stock is now down about 7% this year while Royal Caribbean has plunged nearly 19% in 2021. Royal Caribbean shares are up 3%, but that lags the S&P 500's gain of more than 27%.

Find out which public officials or relatives of public officials shorted cruise line stocks recently and begin the investigations.
I knew someone who took a cruise. They came down with a cold and had to use a hanky... it was just awful. /s
I have a friend on a cruise right now that is being turned away from a port in the Caribbean due to covid on board. Big time lib Trump hater too.
Great opportunity for the Pope. He can now rent a couple of these boats cheap and transport migrants to his underpopulated ,native Argentina.
I already explained to cruise executives how to fix this.
Bribes to politicians.
Crime pays!
Dang it! Just when I taped up my hockey stick to play that shovelboard game.
A cruise is probably the safest place to be at present.
CDC always hostile to that industry.
Media articles to come with the ignorant trotting out their “Petri dish” comments.
OH NOOOOOEZ !!!
Daughter and son-in-law are in Miami right now waiting to board the last Royal Caribbean cruise. At least one of their ports has been cancelled, perhaps more but, though they are disappointed about the stopovers, they are still excited about the fun and sun. They got their tickets very cheaply, especially after the original cruise reservation got cancelled in 2020. At any rate, they could afford to take the fifteen-year-old little brother of son-in-law. This kid comes from a pretty dysfunctional family and was isolated in “home school” out in the countryside long before Covid hit. He spent most of his time playing video games and staying in his room, aside from religious activities as the parents were having too many troubles to supervise his education. Our kids brought him to live with them in a metropolitan area, enrolled him in a private school with strong religious teachings but nevertheless competitive with any public school curriculum and he caught up to his age cohort quickly. He, as a true extrovert, is thriving with new friends and enthusiasm for life.
At any rate, this is his first real trip and he is loving it. Our daughter says he is hugging palm trees and freaked out at his first experience at the ocean. This exposure to the cruise will probably help him want a steady career and home more than any lecture ever could. They will attend church before boarding the ship and have already connected with families with similar values going on the cruise with them. I am glad they made the last cut before the cruises are cancelled again. This is an experience the kid will never forget.
FYI, I am not a cruise enthusiast but I’m happy those who love it can go.
“A cruise is probably the safest place to be at present.”
LOL. Yeah, if ‘safe’ is defined as being at the whim of corporatists & bureaucrats, held captive once a positive test is revealed and, heaven forbid, you ‘test’ positive yourself.
No thanks.
This is how 2021 started- guess what?
Absolutely.
Biggest cruising-economy states are FL and TX. That’s one reason why the feds are down on cruising.
I’ve been on one cruise in my life, didn’t care for it. Felt like cattle. Especially wouldn’t go now.
That's why we cruise on Celebrity. Much fewer passengers so we don't have that cattle car feeling.
CDC only recommended against going on cruises. They didn't cancel them. Hopefully this policy will still be in effect when we go on our Jan. 21 cruise out of Port Everglades.
You mis-clicked.
Not my statement you quoted.
