Republicans eye new front in education wars: Making school board races partisan

Republicans across America are pressing local jurisdictions and state lawmakers to make typically sleepy school board races into politicized, partisan elections in an attempt to gain more statewide control and swing them to victory in the 2022 midterms.

Tennessee lawmakers in October approved a measure that allows school board candidates to list their party affiliation on the ballot. Arizona and Missouri legislators are weighing similar proposals. And GOP lawmakers in Florida will push a measure in an upcoming legislative session that would pave the way for partisan school board races statewide, potentially creating new primary elections that could further inflame the debate about how to teach kids.

The issue is about to spread to other states: The center-right American Enterprise Institute is urging conservatives to “strongly consider” allowing partisan affiliations to appear on ballots next to school board candidates’ names, as part of broader efforts to boost voter turnout for the contests. A coalition of conservative leaders — including representatives of Heritage Foundation, Manhattan Institute and Kenneth Marcus, the Education Department civil rights chief under former Secretary Betsy DeVos — have separately called for on-cycle school board elections as part of sweeping efforts to “end critical race theory in schools.”

The means to take control of school boards is straightforward.

Every school board election cycle your mailbox is inundated with fliers for candidates running for office. Most of the fliers will proudly state, "Endorsed by the Teachers Union". This is the red flag you are looking for.

Most people reading the fliers naively and mistakenly believe the union endorsement means the candidate is most qualified. The opposite is true. If the candidate is endorsed by the teachers union this is the candidate not to vote for. They are in the pocket of the teachers union and they will rubber stamp everything liberal teachers want to promote.

"Endorsed by the Teachers Union" should seen as a scarlet letter; a badge of shame. We need to get to the point where fliers no longer contain the phrase "endorsed by the teachers union" because it will be the kiss of death. At that point, if the phrase doesn't appear on fliers you have to ask the candidate if they are endorsed by the teachers union or not. If they say yes, don't vote for them. If they try to hide their affiliation don't vote for them.

Vote for the candidate who is proud to say, "I'm not endorsed by the teachers union".

“Republicans eye new front in education wars: Making school board races partisan”

The GOP is late to the party because the Democrats made school boards a partisan concern DECADES ago!

School boards are already very very political

Leftists cloak to get elected in conservative districts backed by groups called “.....strong”

It’s a problem...

“The GOP is late to the party because the Democrats made school boards a partisan concern DECADES ago!”

Exactly what I came to post. Remember, the commies always accuse their opponents of doing that which they themselves already do.

Don't look for The Union Label.

Typical Yahoo political slant...

Democrats: good. Republicans: bad.

That has been the message pounded by the Left for about 60 years, and has borne much fruit for them and their communist movement.

I have no idea why they would ever be nonpartisan. They are government bodies with the power to make policy and often even to levy taxes. What could be more political?

Teachers refusing to work and lockdowns are biting the democrats in the ass

Mom’s have been home and seeing what the kids are being taught on line and are rising up

Democrats are getting a good taste of unintended consequences

Wait. The baby-killing agents of cultural destruction have already politicized the school boards. The republicans are only reacting (way too late) to commie assaults on the children.

Yes, yes, and absolutely yes. Should have been done 30 years ago.

Damn right we should make School Boards partisan.

Leftists hate it when you fight back.

So this is a problem? Until recently it was understood that anyone running for a school board had a unwritten (D) next to their name.

Good. Make it so. Leftists need to be drummed out. No queers on school boards either. (Or anywhere near children, for that matter)

That is all correct. Teachers refusing to work and even asking for unreasonable raises as well.

Since the VA election 2 months ago we have all seen democraps and their evil allies in the media all of sudden put on a full assault on parents and taxpayers that dont want racist CRT and leftism taught in schools.

Good idea! The so-called non-partisan elections were just ways for Democrat/communist party bosses to pick their stooges and not have to worry about a Republican challenger. “Hey, there’s no politics in these races. There just elections of good peop0le who want to help.”

well...this could be good and bad. In Dem districts this could mean zero chance of them ever electing someone non-leftist.

“Mom’s have been home and seeing what the kids are being taught on line and are rising up.”

This is as it should be. Forget spending the energy and political capital to make the school board elections partisan. Simply recognize the reality that multiple decades of benign neglect has brought about and work to reverse it with positive messages. I’ve noted some recent efforts organized this way in both a local urban and suburban district that are creating a stir for real change. Nobody around here sees any value to any effort that doesn’t bring about quick changes with improved results.
