South Africa will no longer impose COVID-19 quarantines and stop most contact tracing — now that as much as 80 percent of the country has gained immunity from previous infections, health officials said.
Director General of Health Dr. Sandile Buthelezi announced Thursday in a release that the country will change its strategy to focus on mitigation efforts, the South African reported.

SA deaths are up from weeks ago, about 100/day, rather more than during their winter of a few months ago, and case count holds in the 20,000 range. What did this person mean by mitigation measures?

We’ll just have to wait and see. Spanish flu ended when the world got hit in multiple wives. I think we are seeing the same here. No masks, social distancing, etc will save you. Then once everyone got it, then this virus will not longer be “novel”. So after this omicron wave, the virus will still present it endemic levels but we shouldn’t be noticing it anymore.

Ok, that makes more sense. No point in pursuing approaches towards containment because those are hopeless, they have been overwhelmed. Now some sort of mitigation of the already spread virus is all that can be done. Likely also hopeless.
