The jury has reached a decision in the trial for Kim Potter, the former Minneapolis-area police officer facing manslaughter charges in the April 2021 death of Daunte Wright, as a verdict will be read shortly.

"A trial outcome has been reached and will be read on the record today between 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. CST," according to a notification sent out by the Minnesota Judicial Branch by midday Thursday.

I do believe it was not intentional, but I also believe she still should go to prison for it.

She is a victim of the universal “auto-response without thought” training.

She pulled the right weapon and did what she was trained to do in a precarious situation like that. Her only mistake was verbalizing the wrong commands as she did it. She actually had justification to stop the threat with a firearm if need be.

I agree she was in the right to fire upon Wright. Not knowing which weapon she was firing though was an obvious lack of training and/or ability.

I wonder if it will be a hung jury. It seemed early on in deliberations that there was a definite wide division of opinion among the jurors as to guilt.

Exactly. These charges are a farce. It’s a joke if it’s a hung jury or she is convicted.

They tried to claim a hung jury. But the judge would not accept it and forced them to go back and make a decision one way or another. She broke her own instructions she was holding the jury to about “not letting anyone coerce you”.

How do we know that?

She actually had justification to stop the threat with a firearm if need be.

Based on what? Doesn't he need to be a threat to the life and safety of the officer or of other people in order to justify shooting?

I don’t agree. I believe the police have a duty to use all force necessary to subdue a dangerous criminal that does not put innocent civilians at risk. The scumbag had every opportunity to surrender and discuss his situation with the DA/prosecutor. He chose instead chose to run and get into an auto that could have had weapons or been used as a weapon. He owns all actions after that decision. Only because she said taser, instead of just shooting him is the only reason there is a trial. She has been fired, which is appropriate, given her actions, but at some point the criminals need to be held responsible for their actions. His family should apologize to the city and police for raising such a piece of garbage.

Idiots...Stop fighting with police, who must respond with deadly force. These men and women are not ninjas who can just physically subdue the bad guys.

When the officers ran his name, they discovered that Wright was driving on a suspended license, there was a restraining order against him, and a bench warrant for his arrest on a weapons charge. They had no choice: They had to arrest him. But as one officer began to handcuff him, Wright resisted, jumped back in his car and was about to flee — along with an officer trapped in the passenger window, trying to get control of the gears.

“I agree she was in the right to fire upon Wright. Not knowing which weapon she was firing though was an obvious lack of training and/or ability.”

Actually it is what they are trained to do as a priority. It all starts with holding your firearm as you approach “In case”, not your tazer. And in an event like this because you have no time to think, your auto-response is going to automatically pull what you have in your hand already and use it. She was just rattled in the heat of the moment and uttered the wrong words for the true action. Had she yelled “freeze stop I will shoot” instead she would have been good to go free and clear.

Right thing just wrong words. Doesn’t change that she did the right thing per how she was trained.

She had the right weapon. She did the right thing. She should’ve gotten a raise.
