The New York City Council voted earlier this week to ban new buildings from using natural gas, as the country experiences a notable spike in energy prices.
The law will create the new restrictions that go into effect in 2023 and will primarily force newly constructed buildings to use electricity instead of gas.
Americans are currently facing a nationwide rise in the cost of energy. Two months ago, the Biden administration's Energy Department said it expects heating costs to increase by as much as 54% over the the winter months.
Despite rising costs, the new law is expected to raise the price of powering a home for New Yorkers. The average cost to heat a home with natural gas during winter 2020 was $573, while the average cost to heat an electrically powered home was $1,268,
The Democrat-controlled council, which approved the measure by 40-7 votes, says the law will reduce carbon emissions in the city.
"This bill was about prioritizing people over profits and properties," said Council-member Alicka Ampry-Samuel.

Boneheads, morons & idiots. The value of older, gas-heated apartments and homes will skyrocket, as people shun the new electric-powered craphouses.

A gas-heated building would have pipes from a boiler to carry hot water for heat and chilled water for cooling.
Perhaps even a high-efficiency gas-fired absorption unit.
With fan coils as needed.
Electric heat would hopefully use heat pumps. A good heat pump would use about ONE FORTH THE ENERGY FOR HEATING UNDER OPTIMAL CONDITIONS. There are less costly solutions.
That said, here in DuPage county, the cost of ELECTRIC energy with tax and additional charges is SEVEN TIMES THE COST OF GAS, per BTU.
Big BUT, the construction of an electric building is less than a gas building.
If you will own and keep the building you want gas.
If you are going to build, lease and sell; you have little concern about the operating costs. They can turn the stat down.

And how will all that electricity be generated? How can idiots be so stupid?
problem is there might come a day when the law HAS to be repealed, and all the places that dint have any provision in the design plans now will be almighty expensive to retro...

Below about 35°, does a heat pump even work? When I had a heat pump in the home it switched to direct electric heat, much more expensive, when the temperature was low. Not so good for northern states.

Yep, and I highly doubt the NYC grid can handle that level of electricity.
They just increased the value of every existing gas fed building in NYC.
Mine shuts down at 32 and switches to standby electric. Luckily I live in Eastern Washington and most of our power is from hydro.
Have not had a bill over $200 yet the winter and it's been cold.
I am sure everyone who voted for this has called up the gas company to turn off their service.
The law doesn't even take effect until 2023, some two years away!
You can't fix stupid, especially since there are undeveloped large natural gas deposits in Pennsylvania, less than 150 miles away ! Indicidentally, it's cheaper !
Instead, they want to bring in imported Canadian hydro-power from Montreal, almost 580 miles away.
