THIS is the dramatic moment Russia's £300m stealth warship that was designed to carry hypersonic missiles went up in flames in a humiliating blow for Vladimir Putin.

New footage shows devastating fire damage to the new £307 million warship intended to carry Putin’s lethal Mach-9 hypersonic missiles....

...The scale of the blaze, which started on Friday in St Petersburg, has been viewed as a massive set back to the Kremlin’s naval modernisation programme.

Huge flames and thick smoke were seen rising from the corvette Provornyy at Severnaya Verf shipyard where it was being built.

The battleship was almost completely destroyed by the fire - the latest of a spate of mysterious blazes at top secret naval shipbuilding facilities ...

LOL. The claims of [attacking military targets which I defined, without any source at all, as something involving electricty]

Fixed it for you. You can thank me later. I am your new Russkie Whisperer. Like a Horse Whisperer, except you are lower than a horse.

What military targets were they going to target with IEDs in Crimea when their spies were caught surveying the places of mass gatherings and infrastructure?

I think the reporter meant to say ‘warship’ and not battleship.

GPS satellites operate at over 12000 miles.

That new weapon is likely an anti-satellite missile pretending it is mainly a ballistic missile.

The 25,000 is a weak diversionary attempt to explain away why their missiles have enough energy to reach the orbits of spy and GPS satellites.

If the writer is really young and not a student of history, or a watcher of the History Channel 😉, he or she might have used battleship for a generic term for warship, not really knowing what a battleship was. Battleships are or course, quite obsolete.

“Like I say, as in WW II, we could build 10 of the Bon Homme’s”

IMHO I think this is an over-optimistic fantasy from America’s past.

This is current reality:

Battleship is now used as a generic term for any warship of any type by many—Really Battleships (as a type) are obsolete as Ironclads, and Ships -of-the-Line, Triremes, and Sloops of war. Great in their day, but that day is done. Someday carriers will be obsolete as well, some believe they are now.

Don’t forget the USS Miami, destroyed by arson because a worker wanted to go home early.

I differ with you on the opinion about battleships being obsolete. Perhaps World War Two era battleships are obsolete and I’ll agree. But the role of a battleship in a modern naval fleet isn’t quite yet obsolete any more than destroyers, frigates, corvettes, gunboats, and submarines are obsolete.

I am not an naval architect and will not speculate on what a modern battleship would look like, how it would be armed, and etc. but the experience of the Gulf War should demonstrate that there is yet a place for a big gun capital ship in a modern navy.

I also think a modern battleship would be pretty damned cool !

The extended range allows the missiles to fly over the South Pole where there are no early warning systems.

We can’t afford to lose anything either. The LCS can no longer be repaired by its own crew, for example.

The big gun ship can be replaced by a smaller ship mounting railguns.

Psst - the Russians are in a joint venture with the Indians - who have also demonstrated hypersonic technology.

They’re basing their hypersonics off a Cold War Soviet missile, with lots of upgrades.

Hypersonics are real. We had working hypersonic weapons in the 60s then decided they were a bad idea and destroyed all of them. And then forgot they were a thing.

Modern composites, once they finally catch, do tend to burn well.

The USN LCS ships have more than a few composite parts themselves...
