Hospital beds in Illinois are more full than they were during the COVID-19 pandemic’s deadliest surge last year, according to an analysis in The Chicago Tribune.
The newspaper reported that a part of the problem is a staff shortage that makes it more difficult to staff beds. It said that even with such problems, hospitals in the state are now staffing about 900 more beds than at their busiest times last year, but that they are also caring for an average of 1,500 patients a day.

Maybe if the powers that be spent a little money and time investigating treatments they wouldn’t make people infected with covid sit around for a couple of weeks until they are so sick they have to be hospitalized. And then, given what treatment and why couldn’t they have taken it sooner at home?

BINGO! The first thing I thought of is that a LOT of people are getting their deferred voluntary procedures done as well and back-to-normal for cancer and cardiac work.

According to the HHS's Protect Public Data Hub, updated as of today, 75% of the hospital beds in the state of Illinois are currently in use. Of these, some 12% are in use for COVID patients. As for ICU beds, 72% are currently in use. Of these ICU beds, approximately 25% are in use for COVID patients.
By way of comparison, the national average for hospital bed utilization at the moment is about 77%, with 9% being for COVID patients. For ICU beds, the national "in use" averages are approximately 78%, with 20% being for COVID patients.
Based on the HHS's figures, there is no apparent crisis at the moment in Illinois. At least in terms of hospital beds, that is.
From the headline, it sounds like they only have one hospital bed in Illinois - no wonder there are no openings.
