Omicron has raced ahead of other variants and is now the dominant version of the coronavirus in the U.S., accounting for 73% of new infections last week, federal health officials said Monday.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention numbers showed nearly a six-fold increase in omicron’s share of infections in only one week.
In much of the country, omicron’s prevalence is even higher. It’s responsible for an estimated 90% of new infections in the New York area, the Southeast, the industrial Midwest and the Pacific Northwest. The national rate suggests that more than 650,000 omicron infections occurred in the U.S. last week.
Since the end of June, the delta variant had been the main version causing U.S. infections. As recently as the end of November, more than 99.5% of coronaviruses were delta, according to CDC data.
CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said the new numbers reflect the kind of growth seen in other countries.
“These numbers are stark, but they’re not surprising,” she said.
Scientists in Africa first sounded the alarm about omicron less than a month ago and on Nov. 26 the World Health Organization designated it as a “variant of concern.” The mutant has since shown up in about 90 countries.
Much about the omicron variant remains unknown, including whether it causes more or less severe illness….

Biden will be an idiot if he says this is a bad change. I know… he’s an idiot anyhow.
Funny that they don’t mention Death by Omicron.
It’s good to hear that most cases are of the “mostly harmless” variety. 😎
so Fauci and the Government are a Super FAIL , they should stop and get out of the way
Bring out your dead!
That’s impressive.
I still don’t see how Omicron goes to 73% virtually overnight while Delta drops so precipitously. Where did Delta go?
If Delta didn’t go away, then the Omicron should be almost all additional cases, in which the case counts would be much higher than they are.
Alleged “cases” through “tests” which can find positivity in coffee and cola.
Wait a minute, two weeks ago it was 0% of the cases, last week 3%...it did not go to 73% already! The prediction was mid-January for it to be the majority of cases.
This is good news, it is less deadly.
“Funny that they don’t mention Death by Omicron.”

Hell, Omicron is actually SAVING LIVES the way I’m assessing it. I think this will be apparent once the trailing hospitalization and death counts come out.
I’m loving Omicron.
Already omicron is 73 percent of all cases? That was quick. How many days ago was it first identified and reported?
Oh no. People are catching a cold.
Since it requires lab testing to verify the exact variant, how can they possibly know this? More government health propaganda.
Exactly.
Good, in 4-5 weeks we’ll know a lot more about the severity question.
How many are being hospitalized with a sniffle? Remember...we're the guinea pigs
That must mean all the other versions of CCP virus are 27%. The curve has been bent, a harmless strain has knocked out the previous bad strains overnight ... time to move on?!!?!?
(PS - Look how effective Xiden’s very recent [non-racist unlike Trump’s bans] travel ban on certain African countries was in keeping out CCP-Omicron!)
Did they figure out how to easily classify the variants from simple tests? They said most folks never knew if they had delta because it wasn’t something most got tested for. It’s a mostly positive negative test. So did things change? Now they know with certainty it’s XX %?
Oh you mean that a virus that is highly contagious and spreads very fast spread very fast? Go figure. Ok, let’s get back to ignoring reality and forcing people to get somewhat dangerous jabs that do no good.
