Faced with a revolt from county leaders in a majority of the state — including the suburban NYC counties in Long Island — New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday reversed course and said state inspectors will conduct “spot checks” to enforce mandatory mask-wearing.
The announcement reversed previous statements in which Hochul said local governments would be solely responsible for carrying out the controversial, statewide mask mandate she imposed on the private sector — including private offices — last week.
It also came after officials in nearly two-thirds of the counties outside New York City refused to enforce the mandate — which carries fines of up to $1,000 per violation — because they don’t have the resources to force companies to comply.
“We’ve always said we’re going to leave it up to the counties and we’re going to be making sure that it gets done from the counties but we also want to lend support to them as well,” Hochul told reporters during a news conference in upstate Johnson City, outside Binghamton.
Hochul said the state will “be sending around inspectors to do spot checks to see what’s going on.”
She also said, “I’m going to be helping the counties that have said they’ll help us enforce these smart public safety rules, that will give them the money they need to buy masks for all their businesses and make it so much easier.”
Hochul didn’t say how many inspectors would be sent out or how much cash would be disbursed and to which counties.
A Hochul spokesperson declined to provide additional details afterward.
Last week, Hochul said that “counties have always had to enforce public health requirements” and that officials who refused to carry out her mask mandate were violating their “oath of office, ”

NY is cruisin’ for a bruisin’.
Have the County Sherriff’s arrest the state officials and take them to the county line.
This morning my daughter and i went to a well known place in NYC (which i won’t name) for “Breakfast with Santa.” Its been a holiday tradition for us since she was 3YO and she’s now 18YO.
They sent out reminders that children over 5YO must now be vaccinated. We got there for our reservation and they never asked us for proof of vaccination- never mentioned it.
It would be a damned shame if a few state inspectors were to vanish without a trace.
A real damned shame.

Good. Silent Protest time.
They cannot control people ... not smart, nor smartened ones, but they can control the digital world we are all part of.
Folks really need to re-acquaint themselves with Fascism .
So the Gestapo will be sending undercover informants to rat on businesses who do not comply. It was a nice country we used to have.
They never found judge Crater.
That would be ideal...with the warning "DON'T COME BACK"
I understand the government can regulate some business for public safety, but how does enforcing a mandate by the governor have an exception to the fourth amendment. They should be required to have a warrant to search for compliance.
RE: but they can control the digital world we are all part of.
Imagine being forced to use a government issued Vaccine Passport App that every few months, sends a pop up message saying:
YOUR PHONE CANNOT MAKE OR RECEIVE CALLS, ACCESS INTERNET, BANKING OR TRAVEL-PASS SERVICES UNTIL IT HAS BEEN UPDATED.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO SCHEDULE A VISIT TO THE NEAREST VACCINATION CENTER TO GAIN ACCESS TO YOUR PHONE?
That can happen if US citizens act as sheep.
They’re not even enforcing it at Trader Joe’s in Manhattan.... They were the biggest mask Nazis of any major store.
If speakeasies could exist for years during Prohibition by screening people entering the bar, and when about to be raided, stalled at the door long enough for the internal alarm to clear all the contraband, then surely something similar could be done for this silly situation?
She’s glutton elect a Republican if she keeps this crap up.
They should be required to have a warrant to search for compliance.

Except this is not checking the cleanliness and safety of the food service. This is searching for evidence of another “crime” not under the focus of their enforcement authority.
