Sen. Joe Manchin's bombshell decision to sink President Joe economic agenda has reignited rumors that he may defect from the Democratic Party next year.
Axios reported early Monday that people around Manchin are discussing him leaving. It did not name any.
Those sources said Manchin would prefer to be an independent and caucus with Democrats — the same arrangement as Sen. Bernie Sanders — than to fully switch sides and join the Republicans.
The conservative West Virginia senator on Sunday said he could not support Biden's $1.75 trillion "Build Back Better" spending plan and told Fox News: "I can't get there. This is a no."
Axios reported that the move has triggered further speculation, as well as a desire among Democrats to punish Manchin.

Er, sure. He’s going to change from a RAT Senator everyone wants to influence to another go along, get along RINO. You bet. Manchin wants to be another Romney. Sure.
“Conservative senator”
LOLOLOLOL
Cocaine Mitch approves this message.
Manchin the linguini-spined.
Well the political calculation for him is his constituents feel he’s in the wrong party.
And he’ll never be elevated in the Democrat party, it’s too radical.
Politically, I’m not sure we gain by him switching now.
They claim this everytime that he resists a liberal bill, and he comes out and angrily denies it everytime. He hasn’t defected yet, and frankly our party doesn’t need another fake republican in it. He is still a liberal and supports nearly every liberal cause no matter how radical practically- he’s not switching parties
He’d fit right in with our stable of jellyfish GOPe Senators!
The BBB plan was never a Biden bill or proposal.
It was thought up by the most liberal or progressive members of the democrat party, aka: the socialists.
Biden doesn’t have the mental capacity to think of anything, damaging or helpful to the economy or the country.
He is being used to promote the plan, but is completely out of the loop when it comes to its design or plans for implemtation, other than talking it up.
IF he does, that doesn’t mean he becomes a Republican.
He would be smart to go Independent. Sinema could join him. They would be The Deciders on EVERYTHING, more power than either R or D leader.
1..2.. 3...before he denies rumor...
Depending on West Virginia’s primary rules, Manchin might be in danger of being ousted in a primary. He’s best off playing Hamlet, as the Dems have no way to punish him long term.
If Manchin is going to run for re-election in 1924 (big if), he has no hope except to switch parties.
Trump carried W.Va by 39 points in 2020.
Except for Manchin, there are zero Dems in the W.Va. Congressional Delegation.
Except for Manchin, there are zero Dems that hold statewide office in W.Va.
Everyone has a “Line in the sand”.
However, if he actually changed parties and became a Republican, Chuck Schumer would no longer be the majority leader. No matter what some folks think about Mitch McConnell, he is still better than Chuck Schumer. And also means that every committee in the Senate would go from being majority Democrat to majority republican. It would essentially stop right in its tracks anything significant Biden wanted to do in 2022.
It would be huge.
Just what deplorable patriots need - Manchin joining the Liz Cheney wing of the “party”.
I agree.
Um, nope. I used to think that, no more though.
Schumer is the enemy outside the party, and McDoodle is the enemy within. The latter is more insidious, and arguably more dangerous.
He probably wants the threat to be floating around in the public space, even if he has no current intention, and he may even issue a denial. But the option will nonetheless be in the front of everyone’s mind.
You use all the leverage the situation affords.
