Bill Clinton believes "one of the most profound mistakes we ever made" as a country was not electing his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, president of the United States in 2016.

In an interview with PEOPLE ahead of the release of President Bill Clinton Teaches Inclusive Leadership, which launched Thursday on MasterClass, the former president said Sec. Clinton was "the most qualified person to run for office in my lifetime, including me."

When it appeared that Hillary actually stood a chance of being elected back in 2016, Bill Clinton didn’t seem very supportive of her then. He kept making public remarks that seemed aimed at sabotaging her popularity with the voters.

It got so bad, at one point, Bill was complaining to the press that Hillary’s campaign group was not using him near enough, and he couldn’t figure out why they seemed to be gingerly stepping around him. Many figured deep down, Bill Clinton did not want his wife ‘upstaging’ him by becoming The First Woman President. That title would have diminshed his role in history.
