Rare Rocky Mountain insects will need snowfields to survive

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Federal wildlife officials say two species of rare insects in the Rocky Mountains will need several thousand acres of glaciers and snowfields if they are to survive a warming world that’s threatening them with extinction.

The western glacier stonefly and the meltwater lednian stonefly live in streams that flow from melting glaciers and snowfields. Scientists say the insects are not doing well and face continued declines as they lose a projected 80% of their habitat in Glacier National Park by 2030.

They are mostly found in steep, remote areas that are hard to reach and away from backcountry trails.

A new draft recovery plan from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service suggests the possible transplant of some of the insects to new areas, exploring ways to artificially propagate populations and research into the stoneflies’ heat tolerance.

Researchers have said it’s uncertain what other direct steps could preserve the insects, which are mostly found in national parks that already have strong regulations in place to protect wildlife. That reflects the difficulty of dealing with climate change at the local level.

The wildlife service listed them as a threatened species in 2019 after being sued by environmentalists to act.

Climate change is directly driving the loss of glaciers in parts of the Rockies. Glacier National Park early last century had 150 glaciers larger than 25 acres (10 hectares). Only 25 glaciers of that size remain.

just because man stumbled across a bug that is hard for men to find, does not mean they are endangered... plus they need the glaciers to melt to survive?

insanity

Who is paying the salaries of “scientists” who study insects in Glacier National Park between bong hits?

Evolution in action. Millions of species have already come and gone in the last 2+ billion years.

If humans did not exist, no species would ever go extinct. 🤡

Taxpayers. Sounds like something the National Park Service would sponsor.

Snow? What’s that? Climate discombobulation taking care of that. 😂🙌

They are "federal wildlife officials". Take a guess.

Better get the solar snowblowers going to save the insects from global warming

Hmmm, wonder what happened to the eastern glacier stonefly when the great mile’s thick glaciers melted away into great lakes awhile back?

Yeah, but hard freezes hurts bark beetles and we want them dead.

Maybe the little girl who saved her snowman over the summer in the Apple commercial could shove a few stoneflies in the freezer too.

Of course, the flies could end up the same way.

And if they don’t survive, some insect competitors, that do the same jobs for nature, will survive and will maybe survive better than they are now.

Thank God the dinosaurs went extinct before these enviro preservationists came on the scene. Can you imagine having to chase some 20 foot tall 5 ton meat eater out of the drive so you could get to work?

“Adapt or die”.

That’s right. Darwin said it was the “Survival of the fittest” and liberals love Darwin. They don’t like to be reminded of that.

They are thinking of transplanting them somewhere else. That has worked so many times before.

Also think of this. The government employees, classify insects as endangered, leak to environmental groups who sue. Part of settlement is government pays a settlement to environmental groups and agrees to study the insects more insuring government employees keep their job. What a racket
