Think Legal Weed Cut Down On Crime? Think Again

If you thought legalizing weed would cut down on crime, think again. t did cut down on crime in a way—pot smokers were no longer being prosecuted for smoking, and some growers did come out of the shadows. But it also brought in the drug cartels who could hide their illegal growing operations amidst the tons of legal ones that sprang up. Watch this episode of America Uncovered for how the cartels are moving in where marijuana is legalized, the use of narco-slaves to grow the illegal weed, and how it's wreaking havoc on the environment.

Contrasted to that story you just told, here in Texas I don’t know ANYBODY (as far as I know) that smokes pot or would have much to do with anybody that did.

And, I know a lot of people.

Illegal weed is also being laced with fentanyl.

Big respect for Rush. That may have been true in the 60s. Your logic is as warped as my leftist SIL who thinks all right wingers are church going alcoholics and pill poppers. Most liberals are prudes about sex, rock n roll and pot. There is no bigger prude than a straight, liberal woman.

Selling cigarette taxes as a "sin tax" is how they get approved by the public but it shifts the sale from businesses to street dealers.

FedEx and other companies have paid millions in fines for shipping cigarettes from Native American reservations to New York City which has the highest cigarette taxes in the country. Cigarette sales have been rising since 2014, including in New York City. (If the Wuhanic Plague is going to kill everyone anyway, might as well smoke 'em while you got 'em).

Arrests and fines for unstamped cigarettes are for those who aren't "protected" and paying off the authorities. Eric Garner's crime that he had had been arrested for multiple times? - dealing cigarettes in front of a legitimate business.

Actually you just proved my point. They’re not taking the smart path of legalization. By half assing it they’re getting the worst of both world results one generally gets when one half asses anything.

Illegal weed will always cost less. It’s not taxed.

I recently became the owner of an extraction facility. It kind of fell into my lap. I’m not operational yet and may never be, but I am trying. The facility was originally going to make recreation drugs but I am hoping only to make medicinal products. And for the 7 months I have played with, and witnessed, all of players in this game from politicians, police, fire, inspectors, CEOs of public companies, rival companies, past partners, grow owners, wishful thinkers, etc, and at least in California, the cartel. The experience has been an eye opener.

Forget what city it was when we were vacationing in Colorado, over the weekend and legal dispensaries opened the next Monday. Couldn’t believe how many young, homeless looking people were waiting for the stores to open. Everywhere we went in the town people were begging. It sure wasn’t drawing the best and the brightest into town.

Homelessness has skyrocketed since legalization. [...] Not to mention skyrocketing mental illness

Links?

Maybe he got tired of being shouted down

Not sure what you mean here; there have been exchanges I've ended after establishing a pattern of invincible ignorance on the other end.

I'm not as active on FR lately because I find the signal-to-noise ratio to have dropped.

Homelessness has been growing at 5% to 7% a year in Washington State since legalization. But much more in Western Washington than Eastern Washington. We now have 3 designated homeless camps near our home and the bike paths are now basically impassable. No one who lives here would question the change. There are typically aggressive panhandlers on all 4 corners of busy intersections. They tend to be smoking pot when they are taking a break from their panhandling.

“Homelessness has been growing at 5% to 7% a year in Washington State since legalization.”

That’s not “skyrocketing” in my book - and your link addresses only a single year, during which legalizing Oregon saw a drop in homelessness.

A 7% yearly increase doubles a problem in approximately 10 years... This corresponds very closely to the increase in the number of unsheltered homeless in this area. The unsheltered are the people who refuse to live by the rules and are not allowed in the shelters. The number one rule that they violate is substance abuse. And the number one substance that is abused in this area is marijuana.

You are so heavily invested in the legalizing of marijuana that you simply ignore anything that does not fit your narrative. That is called confirmation bias. Still, it is always fun to see how you will deflect any observation or statistic that is presented.

I thank you for your responses after I and not one of your cohorts pinged you to this thread. Believe it or not I was getting worried about you. You are one of the more challenging people to debate here and I actually appreciate that. I was worried that depression or some other problem was slowing you down.

“A 7% yearly increase doubles a problem in approximately 10 years”

To me, “skyrocketing” implies a much faster rise; YMMV.

“you simply ignore anything that does not fit your narrative.”

Opposite - I quoted and directly addressed the statistic.

“Believe it or not I was getting worried about you. You are one of the more challenging people to debate here and I actually appreciate that. I was worried that depression or some other problem was slowing you down.”

I’m sincerely grateful for your concern (and your complimentary words). Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!

What about people who choose to grow their own for personal consumption? Will they get hassled for failure to pay tax?

I have lost too many friends to Drugs—everyone started with weed and turned up dead or a brain dead hulk of a person. We lost too many to this plague.

I respect your cognitive abilities, your occasional empathy, and your persistence. We typically are inspired and learn much more from our opponents than those who almost always agree with us. So keep up your good work and have a Merry Christmas!
