The Department of Justice is no longer negotiating to settle lawsuits from migrant families separated at the U.S.-Mexico border under a Trump Administration policy, the American Civil Liberties Union said Thursday, after the Biden Administration drew criticism for reportedly weighing $450,000 payments.
The DOJ has cut off settlement talks with parents and children who say they faced severe trauma after immigration officials separated them at the southern border, and now plans to litigate any family separation suits, ACLU attorney Lee Gelernt told Forbes (the ACLU represents plaintiffs in one family separation lawsuit).
The DOJ did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The decision comes over a month after the Wall Street Journal reported the Biden Administration had discussed settling the lawsuits by offering up to $450,000 to each person separated from their family, though the exact payment amounts were in flux.

Scary thing is they actually thought this was a good idea....
This way they can quietly settle confidentially with each individual plaintiff, and sail under the radar of the media. Just a tactical adjustment. The criminals will still get their half million apiece.
How many of those ‘children’ were scattered over multiple adults in attempts to APPEAR they were ‘family’?????
How many illegals ALREADY in the USA took some kids in for other family members so they could attempt to keep kids here IF adults were sent back?

Exactly. The only change will be the media coverage of it.
I’m a federal employee and have worked on our litigated cases with the DOJ for years (when my agency and the Secretary is sued). I’ve noticed a trend (starting with Trump actually but accelerating under Biden) of our OGC no longer fighting to represent our agency zealously and win cases but to settle.
Judges want settlements and get angry when the parties can’t settle.
So I’m not surprised here that the DOJ is settling—but the amounts discussed are just too high.
I’m sure they had some plan that a lot of this payment money would enrich someone, and not just the illegal aliens and their lawyers.
