Most Americans should be given the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines instead of the Johnson & Johnson shot that can cause rare but serious blood clots, U.S. health advisers recommended Thursday.
The strange clotting problem has caused nine confirmed deaths after J&J vaccinations — while the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines don’t come with that risk and also appear more effective, advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
It’s an unusual move and the CDC’s director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, must decide whether to accept the panel’s advice.
Until now the U.S. has treated all three COVID-19 vaccines available to Americans as an equal choice, since large studies found they all offered strong protection and early supplies were limited. J&J’s vaccine initially was welcomed as a single-dose option that could be especially important for hard-to-reach groups like homeless people who might not get the needed second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna options.
But the CDC’s advisers said Thursday that it was time to recognize a lot has changed since vaccines began rolling out a year ago. More than 200 million Americans are considered fully vaccinated, including about 16 million who got the J&J shot.
New data from unprecedented safety tracking of all those vaccinations persuaded the panel that while the blood clots linked to J&J’s vaccine remain very rare, they’re still occurring and not just in younger women as originally thought.
In a unanimous vote, the advisers decided the safer Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are preferred. But they said the shot made by J&J’s Janssen division still should be available if someone really wants it — or has a severe allergy to the other options.

Sounds like J & J didn’t lay down as many greenbacks as the other guys.
Some checks cleared, some did not.
Not happy with that news. My daughter works at home and didn’t need any shot. Then they decided to go to Maui for their anniversary. Doc gave her a J&J. It knocked her down for three days but she had a wonderful trip to Hawaii. That was in September, hope all threat of permanent damage has passed. Plus, she’s just darned healthy, takes a pile of supplements every morning and has for many years.
I had the J&J in March and I’m still here. I also take a ton of supplement to try and mitigate this damn shot.
My first thought as well.
I prefer the PB&J sammich to either one.
I had the J&J and ended up with horrible tinnitus. No clotting problems. (yet?)
Got the jab because on my age, a co-morbidity and I’m a first responder.
Didn’t feel comfortable with the M-RNA stuff.
You’ll be fine. I think if the shot’s going to hurt you it does so quickly.
At least I hope so. I got a Pfizer last summer when it was approved by the FDA. Then a few days later, Pfizer bigwig was appointed to huge job in FDA. Alarm bells rang, so I found a book on AMZ about what rotten crooks the FDA people are. I never had a single side effect,, not even minor swelling at jab site or tiniest bit of pain, so I think I’m fine.
Both of us need to take those supplements by the handful for years and years.
If CDC recommends the other vaxes over JJ, looks like the JJ is the one to get.
Probably has to do with boosters not part of the initial program.
They want that RNA in the vaccine because it does even far more damage.
I don’t trust ANYTHING the CDC has to say.
J&J must not have paid enough to the right people.
When is Novavax getting here?
The CDC lies thru their teeth.
They no longer have ANY credibility....none.
They’re as shaky as a stray dog crapping peach stones in the backyard.
Bill needs a new bra size.....
Until her heart starts acting up….
J&J hasn’t paid their “protection fee” to the Democratic party again. Remember we we through this drill a while ago?
