Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly told a Senate panel on Wednesday that the air in passenger jets' cabins is so clean that face masks "don't add much" additional protection against the spread of COVID-19 on planes.
"The statistics, I recall, is that 99.97 percent of airborne pathogens are captured by the HEPA [high-efficiency particulate air] filtering system, and it's turned over every two or three minutes," Kelly told the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee during a hearing on airline oversight.
“I think the case is very strong that masks don’t add much, if anything, in the air cabin,” he said. “The environment is very safe, very high quality compared to any other indoor setting.”
Southwest Airlines later said in a statement to The Hill that the "sophisticated air distribution system introduces fresh, outdoor air and HEPA-filtered air into the cabin, creating a protective environment prior to the added layer of wearing a mask."
"Southwest Airlines continues to abide by the federal mask mandate for customers and employees both within the airport environment and onboard all Southwest aircraft," the airline added.
American Airlines CEO Doug Parker added during the hearing that an "aircraft is the safest place you can be."
"That’s true of all of our aircraft,” he said.
American Airlines spokeswoman Stacy Day later clarified to The Hill that Parker's statements were not intended to "cast doubt on the necessity of face masks on planes."
"As noted in Doug’s testimony, we support the federal mask mandate, and masks are an important part of our commitment to keeping our customers and team members healthy and safe," Day said.
Former Surgeon General Jerome Adams, however, called the executives' remarks at the hearing "irresponsible."
"These folks are making record money right now because of these mask mandates. I was disgusted when I heard that," he said during an appearance early Thursday on CNN's "New Day."
It isn’t as dumb as wearing a mask outdoors, but it is close. Airliners have very clean air.
Translation: “If masks weren’t killing our bottom line, we’d be all for them. Instead, our industry needs an exemption from the mass control we otherwise wholeheartedly embrace.”
If masks worked there wouldn’t be a vaccine mandate. If vaccines worked we wouldn’t require masks. If masks and vaccines are required why do cases continue to climb?

More and more people seem to be coming out and basically saying, “Yeah, we’ve been lying to you for the past two years. We knew we were lying, but it seemed like a good idea. You know: money, politics, lawyers. So, we lied. And we will probably continue to lie. Just thought you’d want to know.”

And yet if you refuse to wear one, you will be restrained, removed from the aircraft, and probably put on some no-fly list... for your own good.

Air goes around the mask. The only thing the mask is good for is preventing someone from spitting in your mouth. If you ever watch someone talk when a flashlight is shining obliquely at night it’s amazing how much spittle flies out of the mouth.

You can still get sick from the people sitting right around you.
For example, 24 years ago I flew from Boston to Cancun. The woman in the seat directly behind me was coughing the whole ride down there. Two days later I woke up with the exact same cough/cold virus. I spent the entire day in bed with a fever in the hotel room. A couple days later I felt better but then came down with Montezuma’s revenge. I still refer to this trip as the “Vacation From H#ll”.
Logic: If masks work at preventing transmission, we don't need the vaccines.
The left: The vaccines are better than masks, get the shot.
Logic: If the vaccines work at preventing transmission and infection, we don't need the masks.
The left: It is a multi-layer effort, masks and vaccines are better than either alone, get the shot, wear your mask.
Logic: If it is a multi-layer, multi-faceted effort to end the pandemic then natural immunity has a role to play too.
The left: Absolutely not. Natural immunity doesn't exist, even if it did the new marginally effective vaccines are better. Get the shot, get boosted, wear your mask. Sit down, shut up, do as you're told.
Logic: If all the preventative measures fail, at least we have proven safe and effective treatments such as Ivermectin and HCQ to save lives.
The left: Absolutely not. Existing treatments are ineffective and dangerous, don't believe your eyes on recovered patients or decades of safety data. Wait for our new, untested, more expensive, more dangerous treatments. Get the shot, get boosted, wear a mask. Comply or we will systematically strip away every part of your life and liberties until you do. Sieg Heil!

Instead of the BS 'we didn't want to cause a mask shortage', the fact is this was a reaction to Trump not wearing one, and a strategy to scare the public into compliance for future vaccinations and shut downs. It worked.
I don’t wear masks anywhere but an airplane. From personal experience, I have had less occurrence of next day sniffles that I used to get on flights. The masks stop the person next to you from passing something on, before the germ gets into the overall air system. The cleaning they do of the airplane surfaces is hit or miss.
EVERY last person on any given flight is breathing in someone else’s germs AND then exhaling theirs to everybody else in there - mask or no mask.
This is like a three year old who covers their own eyes and says: “you can’t see me!…”
The left: “Oh… just SHUT UP and COMPLY already!!!..”
