In a vote Wednesday, New York's city council approved a ban on natural gas in newly constructed buildings, joining cities like San Jose and San Francisco that have made similar commitments to reduce emissions.
Moving away from natural gas means that stoves and heat pumps will be powered by electricity instead, cutting down on carbon emissions. Nearly 40% of carbon emissions in the country — and more than half of New York City's emissions — come from buildings.
The new ban, with 40 votes in the affirmative and seven votes against the measure, applies to buildings that are seven stories or shorter by the end of 2023; buildings that are taller have an additional four years to comply. There are some exceptions in the bill, including hospitals, laundromats and crematoriums.
"This bill was about prioritizing people over profits and properties," Council member Alicka Ampry-Samuel, who led the effort to pass the bill, said at a rally outside city hall Wednesday afternoon. "We are at a point in our lifetimes that we need to act. We need to make sure we are protecting and saving our environment."

and if you don’t have NG so your only other options are heating oil or propane, heat pump wins for cost.
If everybody in New York City dies in the cold and the dark I will be very upset.
OOPS; NO I WONT!
“I was in Connecticut as a regular visitor to NYC (former fianceé in Brooklyn). Some people are drawn back even after they leave. I haven’t been in NYC since 1997. I drive around it and take I-84 when driving to/from CT. I do NOT miss it.”
Doc,
One of my relatives use to live in Rockaway Beach, Queens, he now lives in a Republican County in Maryland. He says the area where he used to live is ratty now.
I thought the area was ratty when I visited him 3 times between 1999-2002.
However, this “country bumpkin” from the West Coast, enjoyed the energy and business culture of a New York City, regardless of politics.
“The City” was alive and you could feel it. I’ve never had that feeling in any other place.
I hope they get their act together.
Is the council mentally retarded?
How do they think the electricity is generated in NYC? The gas will just go to the plant instead of your home heater.
This will mainly hurt the poor who can’t afford the higher pricing.
My Mitsubishi Hyper heat unit has a 2.7 COP (Coefficient of Performance) at 17 degrees Fahrenheit.
Liberty Utilities in NH is now charging $1.82 per therm for natural gas. At $0.187/kwh, the Heat Pump is cheaper than natural gas down to 25 degrees and it blows away heating oil ($3.10/gal) and propane ($3.566/gal).
Good for them!

They shut down the nuclear power plant up the Hudson so that power source is gone.
Newer heat pumps are more efficient. I would not use one north of the Mason-Dixon Line though.
Our enemies see this weakness and stupidity and draw the conclusion that the USA is really a dumb-ocracy.
Another AA hire......what a DUMBASS!
LOL!!!! HOW TRUE!!
The ONLY way this makes sense is if Alicka OWNS STOCK in the HEAT PUMP COMPANY!
“... people freezing in the dark. This is insanity.”
I dunno. It could have an up side.
“Most cooks hate electricity.”
I HATE /despise / abhor cooking with electricity, but that’s what we have. When Hubby decreed that “This is the house we’re getting!” he promised to change to a gas cooktop. That was six years ago...
I can’t imagine an actual restaurant chef putting up with electric cooking.
In the late ‘90s, we worked with NY State to have heat installed in the family homestead where my parents lived. There was a grant to help elderly low-income residents.
It’s a two-story farmhouse, about 2500 sq. ft., built in 1830. The whole place had been heated by one oil stove in the living room for decades — as long as I can remember.
Before NY would commit funds, an inspection was required. The inspector said it was built better thant many of the new houses they inspect.
The Unvaccinated are being arrested in NYC…
People arrested at Applebee's for refusing to show a vaxx pass.
What's really interesting, to my mind anyway: Check out the uniforms LE is wearing...
Is NYC using a special, handpicked unit of the NYPD to terrorize their fellow citizens...?
Manipulated prices
NH needs a land-bridge to America.
