California Gov. Gavin Newsom thrilled many this weekend by saying that his administration will model a new law on the Texas abortion ban, letting private citizens sue anyone who makes or sells assault weapons or ghost guns.
It won't work. Legally, that is. It will be hugely successful politically, but not without costs to the state and potential litigants.
Newsom denounced the Supreme Court in Women's Health v. Jackson for refusing to enjoin the Texas law that allows people to sue anyone who "aids or abets" an abortion performed after about six weeks. That led to widespread calls for the passage of legislation to "codify Roe," including from the White House.
Newsom, however, wants to replicate the law to limit Second Amendment rights the way that conservatives used it to limit reproductive rights.
"I am outraged by yesterday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing

So Gov. Newsome wants a California law that allows people to sue anyone who “aids or abets” what?
Murder? Already exists. Selling illegal weapons (automatics)? Already exists. What exactly does he want people to sue for?
Men groom women to have unprotected sex so they can enjoy it without concerns for romance, commitment and long term financial responsibility. Abortion which is readily available, inexpensive and socially acceptable is the key to allow men to reach their goals.
Gavin Newsom will waste a ton of taxpayer’s money on this stupid adventure. The United States Supreme Court has already shown that they will shoot down any such laws which are against the 2nd Amendment. It does not matter what this simpleton comes up with, it is destined to be shot down. Where the hell does he get these ideas?
Only in lib-topia would a fetus be compared with a gun.
Why link to MSN for a Fox News opinion article?
Just an fyi - different article at the link.
Which is its whole purpose.
Could his and California’s efforts actually backfire by having the court reassert our constitutional right to keep and bear arms? Maybe nullify most or all of California’s infringing laws and regulations?
Owning an assault rifle or an illegal gun apparently.
The Constitution protects us from the government, not us from other people. California can't ban the ownership of assault rifles any more than Texas can ban people from getting an abortion. He wants to open those gun owners or those who sell to them to a civil suit by anyone off the street, like the Texas law opens abortion providers or any aiding an abortion to civil suits from anyone off the street. And by doing so make the hassle of selling or owing those guns more than they're worth. The Supreme Court hasn't ruled that the Texas law is unconstitutional and they my have the same problem with Newsom's scheme.
Bad link.
Gruesome wants to sue gun and ammunition manufacturers in other states out of business. The manufacturers are leaving the state of California.
You must live in a COMMIE STATE. Here in the Free States, ANYONE who is not a felon can own an automatic firearm. We have the 2nd Amendment-- weapons are NOT illegal.
I've shot a bunch of different kinds of machine and Gatling guns, because I have friends that own them. Why don't I own one? Because the blasted Federal government shot the price to the sky by stopping manufacturing of transferrable machine guns in 1986.
Sort of. He wants other people to sue them out of the state, not the state itself. Like Texas wants to sue abortion providers out of business.
What is an “illegal gun”? No such thing is defined by the Constitution of the United States. You must live in a Commie State, Doodle.
Whatever Newsom decides it is I suppose. By established law guns like sawed-off shotguns are illegal.
He is collaterally approving of the Texas law?
