Albert Lea restaurant owner found guilty of violating state COVID mandate

The owner of a wine and beer bar who openly flouted Gov. Tim Walz's executive orders to shut down last winter during the COVID-19 pandemic was found guilty of six criminal misdemeanor counts Thursday by a Freeborn County jury.

A jury of three women and three men took only an hour of deliberation to convict Lisa Hanson, the 57-year-old bar owner, after a three-day trial punctuated by Hanson's repeated attempts to argue that Walz's orders were unconstitutional.

Judge Joseph Bueltel followed the reading of the verdict with a scathing denunciation of Hanson's behavior, explaining why the governor's orders were legal. "You wanted to make money over the interest of public safety," he said. "You don't recognize the law. You don't think you're subject to the law."

He then sentenced her to 90 days in jail, which began immediately, and a $1,000 fine, considerably more than what Albert Lea City Attorney Kelly Dawn Martinez, who prosecuted the case, had sought.

Asked to comment on the verdict, Hanson raised her fist and shouted, "Liberty and freedom!" as she was led away by sheriff's deputies.

After a warrant was issued for her arrest, Hanson went into hiding. She was arrested several weeks later in Iowa, where she was staying at a motel.

Her restaurant has been closed since February and the city of Albert Lea decided earlier this year not to renew its lease, which will expire at year's end. In the meantime, she was fined $9,000 in a case brought by Attorney General Keith Ellison and fined another $18,000 in November in connection with the case.

In her closing argument, Hanson said she had a duty to challenge "the abusive exercise of government authority" and "the overreach of an overzealous government."

Totalitarian government is here.

And who did you vote for, Minnesota?

These jurists are under the mass psychosis.

Yes, there is that. They would have found her guilty whatever the charge might be, even if it resulted in a death sentence.

When this mass hysteria breaks, and they always do, most of those under its influence will then deny they were ever under its control. To admit so would both be admitting to being weak minded and easily influenced by others, but also willing to forgo personal responsibility to do whatever “the tribe” or mob dictates.

People shot dead in the streets of Minneapolis - no indictment - break Covid laws - Jail time. The sad thing is that Walz will be re-elected without breaking a sweat.

And now all the tax revenue she generated will go bye bye.

But like all good tyrants, it’s about control.

I agree. This woman sacrificed her business, her freedom for 90 days, and her property (fines) for an important ideal; the constitutional bedrock of our republic, much like our founding citizens did. The left will do their best to vilify this woman. This must fail. It is important that we remember her and champion her whenever we can. This is the stuff that leaders are made of; I would follow this particular woman into battle.

If Trump's political advisors don't dial this woman's number and recruit her for local office, they are missing an opportunity.

When do we start dragging these scumbags into the street, oh sorry just my subconscious peeking out from behind the curtain. Eventually the curtains will have to come down for cleaning

She would have faced an extradition hearing, yes. I do not believe Florida has stated that they will not extradite people for activity that is not a crime in FL. Normally it’s basically an automatic extradition except in a few cases even if the action is not a crime in the extraditing state. See the Full Faith And Credit clause of the Constitution.
