MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota lakes have lost nearly two weeks of lake ice over the past 50 years as climate change diminishes the state’s winters, officials from Minnesota’s natural resources and pollution control agencies said Friday.
According to newly released data from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and Department of Natural Resources, the state has lost an average of 10 to 14 days of lake ice over the past 50 years — a change officials say is hurting local economies, the environment and the Minnesota way of life. Some northern Minnesota lakes have seen steeper declines, including Lake Bemidji, which has seen nearly 19 days of ice since 1967.
Air pollution is resulting in warmer lake waters, which in turn leads to more toxic algal blooms in lakes, higher chances of invasive species and declines in populations of lake trout and walleye.
Nearly two fewer weeks of ice coverage on Minnesota lakes also means a shorter season for ice fishing, cross-country skiing and other outdoor activities, impacting the millions of dollars spent on winter recreation statewide each year.
“We all hope that our children and grandchildren and beyond will be able to continue to catch a walleye through the ice,” said Michelle Morey of Women Anglers of Minnesota. “But we need to start making progress now in order to ensure that the future of ice fishing and and bountiful waters and natural resources of our state are preserved.”

Just the other day global warming caused the ice cubes in my drink to melt. Ugg...darn global warming...
I am suspect when those charged with the environment quote stats but don’t actually provide them. I am also suspect when there is a perfectly fixed period of time from which they lift data.
Finally, with all the Somali’s they have imported, one would think they wanted to be a bit more accommodating and increase the temperatures.
That crap could be frozen 2 weeks longer every winter if we would only give the Democrats trillions of dollars.
Great, we can all go out and catch some walleye earlier in the year!
We all gonna die
Give it time.
It will convince them though. Did you think everyone would give up their liberty for a cold? They will again for climate change. Watch and see.
“But a two week longer season for regular fishing... “
Why did you have to interrupt the narrative with facts?
Ruins the narrative
LOL
Oh what a tragedy! I lived in Minneapolis for 2 years. I advocated alternatively abandoning the place to the Eskimos or coal fired SUVs for all when I lived there. It gets so bitterly freaking cold for so long those of you who never had the “pleasure” of experiencing it cannot imagine it.
I’m talking flattening your tires cold. Busting your ass walking down the sidewalk because of the ice...in late April. My little rear wheel drive sports car couldn’t make it up even a mild incline to get into my subdivision even with a running start. The snow that falls in December doesn’t melt until May sometimes. There are 3 week stretches when it never gets above zero. No, not freezing. ZERO! If there’s anything Minnesota could use, it is more heat.
When I see stupid stories like this, I wonder how many of my tax dollars went into funding stupid studies like this.
No Scientist with any credibility can look at this and say it is even remotely scientific.
Climate is cyclical. It was Warmer in Minnesota in 1936 than it was in 2020.
Suits me fine. Two or three days of freezing weather to kill the ticks and chiggers and I am ready for Spring!
When you are over 60, you also will enjoy more warm winters.
What a pant-load. Can’t be anything other than man-caused globull warming. SMH.
liberty
/\
They don’t value liberty , yet.
By the time they do it will be too late.
It’s like they honestly don’t beleive history actually happened.
I’m sure they will develop a shot for it.
Extensive use of road salt is more likely a factor!
