He was actually pretty talented. I was surprised that he wrote a Different Drummer that was sung by Linda Ronstadt.
Apparently Linda didn’t know it either and was surprised to find out.
It is a classic that I grew up listening to. Anyway, a good song and an excellent singer.

I thought “Joanne” one of the most beautiful songs of the time. Still do.

Yes. Beautiful woman and beautiful voice. One of the greats along with Karen Carpenter, Dion Warwick. Actually, I think that Linda has a prettier voice.
Sad: she is fighting Parkinson’s.

I like the Stone Poneys version. I grew up with it playing on the radio.

Practically everyone who listened to pop music in the late 60s knows who they are.

I've read that he was pretty talented.
I totally forgot that he wrote "Different Drum." He wrote that two years before he joined The Monkees.
I've always immensely enjoyed Ronstadt singing Different Drum...at least the studio version. Here's a live version. It's amazing what a good studio and recording "engineers" can do to a song.
"Different Drum" Live Version
I never really enjoyed any of The Monkees music. I had a strong aversion to all "bubble gum" music at the time right through to today.

I think the author’s comment was a real back-handed snarky remark. He is saying that they were famous for being famous, kind of like Paris Hilton or those Kardashian dames.
