WASHINGTON — Days ahead of a major Marian feast day in the Catholic Church, a marble statue of Our Lady of Fatima near the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington was vandalized, with Mary's hands and nose cut off, her face scratched and the cross on her crown broken off.
On Dec. 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, a spokesman at the national shrine told Catholic News Service that around 10:45 p.m. Dec. 5, the perpetrator got to the statue by climbing a locked fence that surrounds a rosary walk and garden that includes the statue.
Video footage showed a masked person doing the damage, which was discovered the next morning. Police were investigating the vandalism...
"Though we are deeply pained by this incident, we pray for the perpetrator through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary under her title of Our Lady of Fatima," Msgr. Walter Rossi, rector of the national shrine, said in a statement...
"There remains much we do not know about this phenomenon, but at a minimum, they underscore that our society is in sore need of God's grace," they said, calling on the nation's elected officials "to step forward and condemn these attacks."
"In all cases, we must reach out to the perpetrators with prayer and forgiveness," said Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York, chairman of the Committee for Religious Liberty, and Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of Oklahoma City, chairman of the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development.
"Where the motive was retribution for some past fault of ours, we must reconcile; where misunderstanding of our teachings has caused anger toward us, we must offer clarity; but this destruction must stop. This is not the way," they said...

Is not the Hail Mary prayer a prayer to Mary?
Do you pray the Rosary the way the messenger at Fatima instructed through a Portuguese girl, two decades after the Fatima event? Have you read where JESUS told followers to not pray with vane repetitions? ... Denial is not a river in Egypt.
The rosary and hail mary are both in contradiction of scripture as noted many times.
Your link just circles back to the FR thread.
No. It is not. Read it.
RE: praying “to” ....
Deacon Harold Burke Sivers had a good reply he gave about prayers, saints and Mary. “If your child were sick in the hospital and you came up to me and asked me to please pray for your child, would I say ‘no, I won’t do it. You should pray directly to God yourself?’ No, I would say I will pray with you. We do the same in asking the help of others, and we are not praying to them in place of God.”
My paraphrase.
That’s it.
The Hail Mary ends with the request “pray for us…”
I have and it is.
Difference being is that in scripture we are instructed to pray with others here on earth.
Paul advocates to always keep on praying for ALL the saints (Eph. 6:18); he makes no requirement that they must be alive. Frankly, I’m happy to think those saints who’ve gone on ahead, and now see clearly, are continuing to uphold Paul’s exhortation and pray for me; they surely can pray more accurately knowing what they now know. For my part, I pray for them that they enjoy fullness of life and love in their abode.
So long as it’s a praying FOR — not praying TO — the saints, there’s no biblical issue with it. The more the merrier.
Well. Define “prayer to Mary”
The context of the passages in Paul’s writings are addressed to people here on earth. Context is your friend in understanding Scripture.
The kneeling, prayers,etc.
That is not a definition
Some kind of evil is afoot...
