PORTLAND, Ore. — Another string of shootings in Portland likely has a lot of people wondering: how long will it last? This year marks the deadliest and most violent in the city’s history, and it's not over yet.
Eight months after City Council approval, the final two pieces of the city's gun violence plan are set to roll out -- a new policing unit for gun violence and $600,000 in grants for smaller community organizations addressing violence. Applications for that funding closed in the last couple of weeks.
Lionel Irving, who runs Love is Stronger, is one person vying for that money.
“We want to create more guys who are being critical thinkers. We want to get guys' literacy levels up. We want to help guys heal from trauma. We want to help families heal,” Irving said.
Irving said he'll use the money to help families of victims and shooters. As of now, he and other applicants find out who gets money at the end of this month, with the checks being sent out in January. Irving hopes the money marks the beginning of long-term investments from the city, though city commissioners have not made that commitment.
“It’s been a struggle to get the funds to be able to do this, and the community needs this,” Irving said. “Gun violence is generational, and I want to be able to be on the forefront and stop gun violence before it even starts.”
Irving said everyone has a role to play in giving kids options outside of violence. This weekend and next, he’s hosting a Christmas gift giveaway at the Church of Scientology in Portland.
