Police are warning Frederick County residents of a growing scam involving fake street performers, known as buskers, stealing personal information.
The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office in a news release urged residents to be on the lookout for “fake” buskers asking for money through cash and electronic credit or debit donations who are using credit card skimmers to steal personal information. Buskers are people who perform music or other entertainment for monetary donations.
Fakers act like they’re playing the violin, for example, when they’re actually imitating the action while a soundtrack plays from a hidden device, police warn. They may pretend to be homeless, be a military veteran or say they have children to feed when this is not true, police say.
“This is a nationwide issue that has now hit this area,” FCSO Sheriff Chuck Jenkins said in the release. “We are going to be proactive and not allow this criminal element to become entrenched in Frederick County.”…

“Fake street performers?”
They are all unlicensed performers setting up shop. We have to determine who to safely give to.
How is this any different?
This is the Washington, DC region. Lots of stupid leftist scum with high-paying government jobs and too much money.
Would serve them right!
The people who built up their credit rating again after being cleaned out giving all they had to the Nigerian email guys.
MD ping.
I’ve never seen a street performer taking credit/debit cards for tips. That’s one difference. I hardly carry cash so I can see how it may be difficult to get tips from others like myself. But, I’d never give a random person my card.
I grew up in Maryland in the 60’s and Frederick was like going to Outer Mongolia.
“Fake it til you make it … but seriously, who donates to pan handlers using a credit card ?!?!?! “
That was my first thought! Stupidly never ceases to amaze me.
I’ll grab this one - MD ‘Freak State’ PING!
Unfortunately I270 has finally destroyed Frederick.
It’s become yet another DC limo liberal hostage.
I later realized she had approached me with the same story about a year ago in the same parking lot.
I tend not to believe it when the I see the same people in different spots asking for help.
“who donates to pan handlers using a credit card ?!?!?!”
I had a secretary one time who gave a phone solicitor (state police benevolent association or some such nonsense) her checking account number for a donation. Fortunately for her they only got her for about $100. Some people are just stupid.
They’ve been in WashCo forever.
The whole fam damily out in front of stores with thousands of dollars of musical gear.
They sound like a freaking professional orchestra.
/always people from “below the border”
They annoy the hell outta me.
If they’re “hungry and homeless”, just pawn that fecking orchestra you’re playing.
Worse yet is the fat chick who was first “homeless and hungry”.
Then she got herself a wheel chair.
Then a sad puppy.
Her ol’ man lurks in the parking lot in their hybrid Ford SUV, which is pulling a nice travel trailer.
She could upgrade that mangy carboard/Sharpie sign, easy.
I should take my ancient sickly Podengo and sit on lot medians, begging for food and money.
We’re both scrawny and pitiful.
Get rich that way.
Like this but with more high dollar tech stacked everywhere.
Loud AF and annoying.
Dude playing that damn good would be snatched up by any local orchestra.
I swear this guy (with one child) and his wife (with 2 kids) set up shop in MoCo. I read on NextDoor about these two... first they were in Bethesda, then Rockville, then Olney etc.. I am assuming MoCo figured out they were scammers and they moved onto Frederick. Okay... now for the non PC word.. they are gypsies. Yes, that word could get me cancelled or whatever but that’s what they are.
Dumb people
