When “the left” becomes the party of wealthy elites and state security agencies who preach racial division, state censorship, contempt for ordinary citizens and for the U.S. Constitution, and telling people what to do and think at every turn, then that’s the side you are on, if you are “on the left”—those are the policies and beliefs you stand for and have to defend. It doesn’t matter what good people “on the left” believed and did 60 or 70 years ago. Those people are dead now, mostly. They don’t define “the left” anymore than Abraham Lincoln defines the modern-day Republican Party or Jimi Hendrix defines Nickelback.
So look at the list of things supported by the left and ask yourself: Is that me? If the answer is yes, great. You’ve found a home. If the answer is no, don’t let yourself be defined by an empty word. Get out. And once you’re out, don’t let anyone else define you, either. Not being a left-wing racist or police state fan doesn’t make you a white supremacist or a Trump worshipper, either. Only small children, machines, and religious fanatics think in binaries.

The Turn = Red Pilled
He was on the wrong side.
People have been predicting the Left would bring us here for decades.
He refuses to own his complicity in getting here.
It is OK. Better late than never.
I’ll think in binary if I want to.
That guy is either a jerk or he is not.
Not really. We just gained another RINO.
It’s like conservatives in the northeast, where I come from. There is always a “but...” in their principals.
“Everyone has a right to a gun.... but....”
“Abortion is wrong... unless...”
I was mired in these people for 32 years. I watched CT “heroes” line up to register guns and magazines who said “I won’t comply... but....” “we’ll win the next round”
I see it all over the country with vaccine compliance. No one wants to lose their job but sometimes freedom hurts.
This guy and about 40 percent of conservatives bend like a Reed in the wind. Bet on it.
Looks like somebody got red-pilled.
Our reaction should be gratitude and extending a welcome. Hard stop.
In some ways, Jeff Bezos represents the conflict in the left. He represents the hated behemoth Amazon, yet owns the Washington Post which is a major organ of left-wing propaganda. The left is like a snake devouring its own tail.
Leibovitz is an ass.
Hm. Supporting the "host of measures designed to even the playing field" has "unintended consequences"?
"Unintended consequences" like Josef Stalin type tyranny? Odd. I thought that forcing people against their will to observe a "whole host of measures" for the good of the collective was a fully expected component of Josef Stalin-like tyranny.
Funny you hear that from Leftists all the time about "unexpected consequences". To them, it is often dismissed with the "breaking eggs to make an omelet" justification.
I understand fully when I hear this from 20 year old people in college. They are young, idealistic, and don't have a huge amount of applicable life experiences. I try as hard as I can to give them room to grow out of it.
Once they get out, have a family, begin paying taxes, buying toilet paper for their house, and encountering government inefficiency, red tape, injustice, and downright stupidity, people can and often do change their opinions.
Cue up the Churchill quote because there is truth to it: "If you are not a liberal when you are young, you have no heart, and if you are not a conservative when old, you have no brain."
However, one of the most disturbing things about Leftists is that...many of them never grow out of it.
Churchill was absolutely right about old Liberals.

Nothing stays the same, including political parties. If anything, there has been a polar flip between what was the Democrat and Republican Party of 50 years ago and today.
Dems are now the party of big business; in fact the party of the mega corporations. Dems use to proclaim themselves the party of labour and the “little guy”. Now they’re the party of the elites and the powerful. Their ultimate playbook is to build a corporatist/fascist one party state like China.
Meanwhile, the Republicans, at least those not still tied to corporatist interests, are the part of the populists and those who want to check the power of government.
He is right. Many on the left would change if they really stepped back and looked at what is happening.
“. You are not “a supporter of free speech” if you oppose free speech for people who disagree with you. You are not “for the people” if you pit most of them against each other based on the color of their skin, or force them out of their jobs because of personal choices related to their bodies.”
I see a lot of retired people and people not working under a vaccine mandate who are big advocates of people making a statement by quitting their jobs if they do face a mandate.
“vaccine compliance. No one wants to lose their job but sometimes freedom hurts.”
I live in CT now. What is blowing me away is folks who believe the propaganda and go rushing off to get their boosters and their flu shots—even though they are retired and can do what they want.
I always knew that a lot of folks were not real bright—but today they are showing a special kind of stupid.
It reminds me of the folks (over a hundred years ago) that fell for the World War I propaganda—and wanted to be “heros”—when in fact they ended up losing their limbs or getting gassed in a battle over which European monarch won bragging rights—in a war that just dug a deeper hole for everyone involved.
For people who are "not real bright," leftism has become — over the last sixty years or so — a "smart suit," an outer covering one can pull over their actual self and immediately appear intelligent, sensitive, wise, etc. That's why it's adopted by so many people who have been made popular by their looks, or by some outstanding but narrow talent they happen to have.
They need to be seen as intelligent by the public, and they know they don't have what it takes to actually be intelligent. No problem. Just spout leftist platitudes, and everyone will think you're enlightened, even though underneath you're just an average schmo, with an IQ of 102. As if that's something to be ashamed of.
For DECADES we have been the ones supporting these corporations in the name of free markets YET they have turned into WOKE monsters, reminds me of Trump reciting THE SNAKE at his rallies!!
If the D party gets pounded in this next election as they may well, I think it will open up a rare opportunity. Conservatives essentially got driven out of the D party about 15-20 years ago. It was a big problem because it allowed the loons to take over. Once the loons find themselves humiliated, there will be a window of opportunity for other ideas.
I could actually hear that when I read it. ;-D
