‘If I run, he won’t’: Donald Trump downplays Ron DeSantis’ 2024 prospects

'If he wanted to run, that's OK with me. I think we'd win by a lot.' Former President Donald Trump continues to say Gov. Ron DeSantis won’t run against him in 2024 and can’t beat him if he does, while reminding voters DeSantis wouldn’t be Governor without Trump’s endorsement.

During an interview with South Florida radio host Brian Mudd, Trump offered his latest in a series of statements essentially claiming he made the Governor and DeSantis knows better than to run against him in 2024.

“I do think if I run, he won’t,” Trump said. “I know they try and create a friction. I don’t think it exists at all. It might, you know, you never know. If he wanted to run, that’s OK with me. I think we’d win by a lot. But he’s good. And he’s done a good job as Governor.”

Trump also offered a new detail on his 2018 DeSantis endorsement, with Trump finding new ways to explicitly take credit for DeSantis’ victory.

“When Ron came to me, he was at 3%. And he had no money. And he asked for an endorsement. And I actually, you know, wasn’t too thrilled because … you know, he was very good, he helped me with the (Bob) Mueller hoax, because we had many hoaxes, and he was on television a lot,” Trump said. “But people didn’t relate him doing that as Governor. So when he announced for Governor, people didn’t really know who he was.”

“So when Ron asked me for help, for an endorsement.” Trump added, “He was at 3(%), and 3(%) means you don’t have a chance. He went up like a rocket ship.”

Trump noted DeSantis’ chief primary opponent, Adam Putnam, told him the endorsement was “like a nuclear weapon went off.”

When he speaks like this, my eyes roll so hard I get a headache.

Sigh.

I like DeSantis. But his time is 2028.

Same here! Trump needs to be careful and watch his words. His lack of humility is a big turnoff and all conservatives love DeSantis.

DeSantis needs to run. Trump had his shot and…

Nuke them ALL!!!

“We give them money-but are they grateful?
No, they’re spiteful and they’re hateful
They don’t respect us-so let’s surprise them
We’ll drop the big one and pulverize them

Boom goes McConnell and boom Cheney
More votes for you and more votes for me
And every RINO the whole country round
Will just be another run out of town
Oh, how peaceful it will be
We’ll set everybody free

Trump’s becoming less inspirational by the day. Does he want what’s best for the country or what’s best for his ego? DeSantis has been the national leader we needed to fight this vaccine Insanity. Meanwhile the only thing Trump said about the vaccines is that they are great and everybody should take them.

Sheesh Trump, can’t you ever shut your mouth? DeSantis is the best thing we have going for now. Your ego and baggage will be hammered 24/7 by MSM. I love what you did for our country, but best if you become a behind scenes power player.

There was a time when Trump and Cruz were friendly rivals.

Then Trump got nasty and flamed away at Ted. Bigly.

I’m saying the same thing will happen to DeSantis if he does decide to oppose The Donald.

Donald just being his usual arrogant buffonish self. As much as I like Donald and did the time I voted for him in 2015 I would love to see DeSantis run against him. It’d be a great campaign and Trump wouldn’t be able to coast on his usual Twitter charm alone this time. DeSantis would make Donald work and work hard to win and it would help to keep Donald honest. In the end if Trump became the candidate I’d vote for him again, albeit a little reluctantly this time around though. I’m just not so sure he would be the best candidate to win in 2024 though.

I have loved trump but now see his role as kingmaker, not president out getting the masses on board.

DeSantis, very good and could manage the country the way Trump cannot.

A yuge whopping Ditto there friend. He's kind of dampened my spirts for him as a result. He can be so overly pompous to suit me at times.

Governor DeSantis needs to stay in Florida and provide an alternative to the creeping socialism that’s infecting so much of the country.

If 45 can win again, he’ll become an important ally in the struggle to restore federalism to its proper place in our system of government.

If the Dems prevail, the Governor will be positioned as the primary opposing voice for the conservative/populist movement.

Or at least, because he’s a grown-up unlike some others, he’ll let it slide.
