Parag Agrawal, who was appointed this week as Twitter's CEO, has joined at least a dozen other Indian-born techies in the corner offices of the world's most influential Silicon Valley companies.
Microsoft's Satya Nadella, Alphabet's Sundar Pichai, and the top bosses of IBM, Adobe, Palo Alto Networks, VMWare and Vimeo are all of Indian descent.
Indian-origin people account for just about 1% of the US population and 6% of Silicon Valley's workforce - and yet are disproportionately represented in the top brass. Why?
"No other nation in the world 'trains' so many citizens in such a gladiatorial manner as India does," says R Gopalakrishnan, former executive director of Tata Sons and co-author of The Made in India Manager.
"From birth certificates to death certificates, from school admissions to getting jobs, from infrastructural inadequacies to insufficient capacities," growing up in India equips Indians to be "natural managers," he adds, quoting the famous Indian corporate strategist C K Prahalad.
The competition and chaos, in other words, makes them adaptable problem-solvers - and, he adds, the fact that they often prioritise the professional over the personal helps in an American office culture of overwork.
"This is the result of a drastic shift in US immigration policy in the 1960s," write the authors of The Other One Percent: Indians in America.

Do you think?
Very lame response.
Go to sleep, now. You’re wearing out.
Dinesh D’Souza, conservatism’s favorite charlatan. He launched his career by accusing various conservatives of racism, in imitation of the sleazy David Frum. One of D’Souza’s first targets was Sam Francis, whose writing was a blueprint for the populism of both Buchanan and Trump.
Dinesh plagiarized sections of his book “The End of Racism”, charging the writers that he was stealing from (not Sam Francis this time) with racism at the same time that he claimed their ideas as his own. His publisher had to pulp the first printing and take out the stolen material.
Dinesh likes to play the victim card regarding his conviction for illegal campaign donations. He claims “Rosie O’Donnell did it!” and that she didn’t go to jail. But like many things Dinesh says it’s self-serving. O’Donnell’s contributions were all openly done in her name and small enough that they could have been due to error rather than intent. Not enough there to send her to Men’s Prison. Dinesh on the other hand recruited people for a scheme that allowed him to hide large contributions of his own; even a slow-witted judge can recognize “consciousness of guilt” when you hide what you’re doing. Not to mention that Dinesh pled guilty to the charges anyway.
Once he got out of the slammer some Christian college decided that Dinesh would make a great leader of their fine institution, and that lasted until he was attending conferences and sharing hotel rooms with a woman not his wife. As with the criminal charges that he earlier pled guilty to, Dinesh posed as a victim in this instance too.
Then there’s the whole bastardized histories that he’s been peddling for years, but this post is long enough.
A friend of mine who spent his entire career in Silicon Valley, starting in the late ‘60s when it was staffed almost solely by white American engineers, agrees with what you just said 100%.
You replied in large volume ...well written....to a position I didn’t take....did not say he was a fake.....I said he’s not what people here think....mostly because most here are bound by talk radio or Tucker or Sean talking points which can bring their own sets of issues
Dinesh is a neocon ...sort of....not above playing the race identity game when it suits him.
And he’s a denouncer of southerners.....I don’t like that...
It’s something actual conservatives like Goldwater and Magnus and The Donald didn’t or don’t do but Dinesh and Ben Shapiro do
Not to say they are not correct at times
Pelham explained well
I was quite explicit that not all Indians are bad news
I’m just not impressed with most
Nor am I encumbered like your average poster here with a knee jerk need to cozy up to minorities simply for fear of being called racist or trying to be righteous
America was founded by mostly Christian Europeans ....especially Western Europe and in particular Dutch English Irish Scots Welsh French and some Spaniards .....and so far I’d say they are the stock that has contributed the cream that has yet to be equaled by anyone except Italians
Of course that ship has long sailed and since the 1840s we’ve allowed in a wave of other groups white black brown yellow gray etc that are more prone to embracing collectivist ideology
Indians are just the latest to embrace what we now call, cultural Marxism via identity victimhood and anti white politics
Their support for progressive politics is overwhelming ...I think even a higher dem voting % than Jews or Chinese
Not encouraging
My apologies, I didn’t mean to misrepresent your post. I personally don’t know any blanket denunciations of Southerners by him which is something I would not agree with.
If you have any links to that kind of thing, can you send them to me? I would most certainly take those under consideration.
I definitely don’t know everything about everyone, that is for sure. I try to take them as I see them, but it doesn’t mean I don’t miss things. I was surprised to see how much of his work I have either read or watched, but I may not be as sensitive to that type of criticism of the South as some people are, and it might just not have registered on me the same way, so I would want to know.
Possibly the most reasonable post I’ve ever seen here
My compliments sir or ma’am
And same to you, Wardaddy.
Same to you.
I will take 50 Indians over 1 Chinese and I am neither.
How’s that “meritocracy” doing for ya America?
What is wrong with Chinese and Indians going back to where they came from? I though we were a western country.
Yeah, that’s it. All those Indians succeeding not only in tech but in marketing, management and executive roles are only there because of racism. Likewise, black women haven’t got a shot in Silicon Valley because of those racist Indians.
The Koreans tend to learn English well.
And lots of Chinese over here on spying assignments.
But many Indians and many smart Indians competing in a country where by far tech presents the greatest opportunity—and tech in the US often the very greatest opportunity.
Ask your friend if they’ve noticed which province and group seems to bubble to the top and which get 2nd billing. The caste system has never left Indian immigrants.
(Skeptics, just DDG search for “caste system indian americans” and you’ll be stuned in the beeber.)
And the new “imigrants” don’t like this country so much.
So, you are right:
GO HOME!!!!
