The Russian military has deployed coastal defense missile systems near Pacific islands also claimed by Japan, a move intended to underline Moscow's firm stance in the dispute.
The Bastion systems were moved to Matua, a deserted volcanic island in the middle of the Kuril Islands chain. Japan claims four southernmost islands.
Russia's Defense Ministry posted a video Thursday showing massive missile carriers moving ashore from amphibious landing vessels and driving along the coast of the volcanic island to take firing positions as part of drills.

Funny about the timing of this. Didn’t China and Russia sign some sort of military alliance document very recently. This couldn’t be a coordinated move with China to put pressure on Japan to stop supporting Taiwan now would it.
The last time the Russians went at it with Japan, mostly on the Korean Peninsula, it didn’t go well for the Russians.
BTW, the treaty that ended that war was signed in New Hampshire.
Interesting stick being brandished alongside the carrot of “peace treaty” being promoted per https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/4017618/posts
Cool. Putting missiles and the troops and support hardware for them on uninhabited islands. I guess Russia has lots of spare missiles and troops and stuff.
Google earth shows an airstrip on that island.
So it does. In any case Russia doesn’t already have enough land it can’t manage or utilize?

That’s why I posted it.
They just might.
Expect they’re satisfied with enforcing ownership. Conquest is often just an ego thing, and losing the Soviet Union satellite states was a huge blow (ditto China losing Taiwan); re-annexation is an attainable goal for the motivated, likely more motivating than resistance thereto by the escaped territories.
My thought as well...after a look on Google Earth, I say, let them have the island.
Doesn't look like Sandals will be building a resort there soon.

The old saying about those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it.
Those islands belong to Japan. Sorry.
Since the War, those Islands belong to whoever can take and hold them.
There was a Japanese airbase during WWII. The runway was refurbished several years ago.
A repeat of the Russia Japanese war would not end they way you want it to.
At the very best outcome it would end Japan entirely.
Don’t forget the Soviet Union’s invasion of Japanese territory in 1945—after our soldiers, sailors, Marines, firebombs and nukes had laid Japan on the shelf. That’s when they grabbed the Kuriles as well as the adjacent islands that Japan calls its Northern Territory.
Japan considers it Japanese territory. Russia and Japan never officially ended their war after WWII. No peace treaty.
