The two countries have been holding consultations for decades to conclude a World War Two peace treaty

MOSCOW, December 2. /TASS/. Russia maintains the political will to continue talks with Tokyo to search for solutions that will lead to signing a peace treaty, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Thursday.

"Japan is our partner and we value our bilateral relations," he said. He also stated that Moscow and Tokyo have a "problem in relations."

Yes, now that Moscow has recently, formally, militarily occupied some of the disputed area, it is ready to “talk”.

But we still occupy some of their land.

“It’s about China...”

BINGO! Not to mention that the Russian government had been absolved of any post-Soviet Union dissolution legal treaties as well, which makes this new development all the more strange, if the CCP is not involved.

Last I checked, they were bound by Soviet treaties still as a successor state. When were they ‘absolved’ and by what authority?

Yep, for 75 years, Moscow, both Soviet and Russian Federation did not feel a need to station military on territory deemed Russian, until just now.

Could it be that there was no threat for 74 years, and there IS now?

Or did the Russians just finally discover there was a place where they weren't being meanies when they could have been for 75 years?

It is also interesting that the USSR was formally at war with Japan for less than a month.

The big hurdle: the four westernmost of the Kuril Islands, which need to be turned back to Japan. Solve that and a peace treaty could be signed almost tomorrow.

Ya, may be Russia & China are preparing the board for The Great Annexation (commencing upon deposal of Harris).

I started writing “Biden” there, but then realized the real period of US administrative weakness is when Harris is replaced, which I expect will happen _before_ Biden is 25thed. Having a literally demented POTUS with an extremely controversial new nominated-not-elected VP in place, ready to fill Joe’s chair but still waiting for him to leave it, creates maximum US instability for the short period needed to execute “hyperwar” against Taiwan, Ukraine, and other low-hanging fruit.

(”hyperwar”: blitzkrieg on steroids, annihilation of the target’s ability to wage war in 3 days or less (if not 3 hours). Subsequent conflict is a matter of filling the power vaccuum, a matter of occupation - a separate issue from the war per se.)

If The Great Annexation commences upon Harris’ removal, US’ administration is caught in the chaos of a new VP being installed, and blindsided (*cough*) by the need to remove Biden ASAP and replace with the barely-oriented new VP. By the time POTUS can coherently act, the war will be over. Generals will be screaming at the Administration for not giving the go-ahead in time, having been dorking around with political posturing instead of coherently preparing for the obvious; those actually running the Administration have little interest in international diplomacy (i.e.: living up to mutual defense treaties) and won’t want involvement in a _real_ war.

See #13. That’s the rush. Get Japan in its place before China & Russia take over Taiwan & Ukraine upon Harris’ removal.

The big hurdle: the four westernmost of the Kuril Islands, which need to be turned back to Japan.

Why? Japan lost the war.

It is also interesting that the USSR was formally at war with Japan for less than a month.

Correct, and that may have been because the US, the significantly stronger seapower, was defending the entire Alaska - Aleutian chain as the Allied supply route to Ally Soviet Russia. The Allied Russian Front depended entirely on that route, and Soviet Russia's Pacific Navy wasn't anywhere near up to the task.

Global inaction or meager reactions to advances by Moscow in recent years (Crimea, Ukraine, Syria, Central Asia, encroachments in others sovereign space in waters and airspace around Scandanavia) convinced Putin there was more leverage and little risk in advancing its military interests.

I can’t see any reason for them to use against Harris.

She is golden, no scandals. They can’t call her incompetent because she has no official duties as VP, except tie breaking votes.

Plus, a replacement, should they ever get that far, has to be approved by BOTH HOUSES OF CONGRESS not just the Senate, so that would take a longer time than a cabinet office.

China and Russia can take their sweet time...............

These are democrats you are talking about. If they cannot find a reason, they will invent one.
