South Africa’s coronavirus cases have doubled in a 24-hour period following the first detection of the omicron variant in the country last week.
Authorities said there were 8,561 news cases recorded in South Africa on Wednesday, up from 4,373 on Tuesday, The Associated Press reported.
Although it is too early to tell if the surge is due to the omicron variant, scientists say it is possible the new strain could be a factor.

They were lamenting Africa didn’t have any cases. Its was

SA reported 4300 cases yesterday vs 2300 the previous day. They had been in a decline from their winter spike in July.
Death count in the 20s, though if Omicron were the spike, there hasn’t been time for lungs to fail and deaths to occur.
From day 1 btw, South Africa has had 2.9 million cases and of those 90K died for a death rate per cases of 3%. The US number is 1.6%. The true test will be to see elevation above 3% over the next week or so. That will say something about severity.

I think I read it’s 115%. It seems no one dies from this strain PLUS it has properties which kill any existing run of the mill flu virus you may have in your system.
It’s science....
