Yesterday in our “Picks” section we linked to Christopher Caldwell’s terrific CRB essay “France on the Verge of Civil War,” which was a deep dive into the rise of Eric Zemmour on the French political scene. The controversial Zemmour has rocked to the top of the early polls ahead of the presidential election scheduled for next spring, leaping ahead of Marine Le Pen, the previous outsider candidate from the right.
Today Zemmour released a video declaring his candidacy for president, and I’ve heard comparisons (including from a French student in my political science class this semester) comparing it to Charles de Gaulle’s famous July 18, 1940 radio broadcast pronouncing the cause of Free France amidst the nation’s collapse before the German army. For our readers who understand French, the video is at the bottom—but even if you don’t speak French I recommend watching it for a few minutes to take in how powerful it is.

“It’s why we must preserve our architectural, cultural, and natural heritage. It’s why we must restore our republican education, its excellence and its belief in merit, and stop surrendering our children to the experiments of egalitarians and pedagogists and the Doctor Strangeloves of gender theory and islamo-leftism.”
That’s a great article quoting an amazing, eloquent speech.
France does indeed seem to have awakened from the various forms of wokeness that it, too, has suffered for a good while now.
Preserving good things is a good thing.
Sharing with others should not require one to destroy his or her own good home.
And if diversity is a strength, then why would immigrants not want to learn and fit in with a new culture when they choose to move to one?
(Is it maybe actually a slow way to conquer?)
I watched the video. Zemmour actually says more and says it more forcefully than in the translation provided on Powerline.
It's not dead yet.
He had better have excellent security - there are people who will want him dead...
It certainly applies to the US. Zemmour laments the muslimization of France.
We need more politicians like Lauren Boebert who called out the Jihad Squad.
