Will France Save the West?

Yesterday in our “Picks” section we linked to Christopher Caldwell’s terrific CRB essay “France on the Verge of Civil War,” which was a deep dive into the rise of Eric Zemmour on the French political scene. The controversial Zemmour has rocked to the top of the early polls ahead of the presidential election scheduled for next spring, leaping ahead of Marine Le Pen, the previous outsider candidate from the right.

Today Zemmour released a video declaring his candidacy for president, and I’ve heard comparisons (including from a French student in my political science class this semester) comparing it to Charles de Gaulle’s famous July 18, 1940 radio broadcast pronouncing the cause of Free France amidst the nation’s collapse before the German army. For our readers who understand French, the video is at the bottom—but even if you don’t speak French I recommend watching it for a few minutes to take in how powerful it is.

Go to the link and read the translation of candidate Zemmour's speech. With little change, it could apply equally to the United States.

You are a fast reader.

Near the end of the article is this tidbit:

"I am told today by my French student that Zemmour and Le Pen have formed an alliance, and that early polls show them attracting 40 percent of the vote."

That’s what I would expect. But perhaps the French want “LePen-ism” without LePen.

Not in French system: two top vote getters compete in the 2nd round if nobody got 50% in the first.

Several years ago Sarkozy submitted a referendum on surrendering more power to the EU. It was soundly defeated, so he went ahead and had the French parliament do it anyway.

The current regime in France treats ordinary Frenchmen the same way the ancien regime treated the French peasantry before 1789. Of course, our elite does us the same thing to us.

Both republics have a second revolution long overdue.

The article, and the speech, conveniently avoids the fact that France has almost entirely abandoned Christianity.

I see you actually read the speech. Are you sure you belong on this forum? :)

I’d put my money on Poland, coming to the rescue against the muslim hordes, like she did in 1683. Sad how history repeats itself, or rhymes as they say.

You are right. Perhaps because Zemmour is Jewish? But if no one else will pick up the flag ...

Le Pen is compromised by her party’s past under her father’s leadership when it was basically a neo-fascist party steeped in Holocaust denial and anti-semitism.

Zemmour is jewish, so he obviously doesn’t have that problem. He is probably the better bet.

More importantly, Poland and the other members of the Visegrad Group have made their intentions to defend Christianity quite clear.

To me, that was the most obvious problem with the speech. It's nationalistic without having an understanding that post-Christian France can never be the great France of past centuries. That the decline of France, not the rise, began in 1789.

A very stirring speech.

As a frequent visitor to France and admirer of the accomplishments of the French people, I pray to God they succeed in reclaiming their nation and driving the barbarians from their midst.

He did cite the greatness of Notre Dame and heroism of Joan of Arc and other great Christian figures — and thereby praising the Christian soul of France.
