One of my correspondents is an incredibly acute observer of the Democrats' non-stop assaults on the State of California, especially in the transportation industry. He recently sent me an email about the fact that California didn't stop with its attack on trucking. Instead, California Democrats are also going after the shipping industry. He gave me permission to reproduce his email here:
Did you know that, in addition, to all the other wanton destruction in this state, such as the electric car mandate (for which no infrastructure is yet being built), Democrats have similarly deliberately destructive plans for shipping? In 2027, they're going to require all ships in California ports to turn off their onboard generators and run only onshore power.
This is a big deal, costing tens of millions per dock, and, of course, it's going to require foreign-owned ships to spend hundreds of thousands, if not millions, per ship to make the conversions necessary to comport with the new law.
So if you're a ship owner and you're transporting goods either to or from the USA, and you think that California is geographically convenient, what you're doing right now (this minute) is planning alternate destinations. You're going to land your ship in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, etc., or even build a new facility in Baja.
But the conflict doesn't stop there. Even if a company has the margins to afford the new infrastructure, California utilities are massively hiking their rates and are set to do so even more aggressively in the future. So even if you want to comply, there's more at stake than money. The rate hike is going to mean a massive jobs exodus out of this state.

Like the port will have enough places to put all the ships duh ensues.

It’s high time about 47 State Attorneys General gang up and sue the bejeezus out of f’n CA.
Alas, the only red state on the Pacific coast is Alaska. I guess it is time to upgrade the Alaska Highway, which connects Alaska with Alberta; more trucks are going to use it.
There are two things I wonder about.
1. According to the article they are going to be tapping into the existing California power grid. California has rolling brownouts and complete blackouts during the annual fire season. Imagine having to guarantee power to those ships even during the fire season.
2. How many ports worldwide have shore power readily available for every berth in every port. I imagine this is a 1st world every day thing, a 2nd world luxury and a 3rd world pipe dream.
This isn’t a necessary policy. It’s one of those Green policies that isn’t well thought out.
Seems like this piece is making a mountain out of a molehill. The vast majority of ships, from yachts to mega-cargo ships have shore power hookups, and the piers in all of our ports have shore power at each berth. This requirement began back in 2017 at 50% of each fleet and ramps up to 100% over a decade. Sure there will be a fee for power and of course longshore union electricians to connect and disconnect the shore power. So, your cheap chinese imports will cost a few cents more.
You hit the nail on the head. I would also add that the unique geography, along with insane zoning restrictions, shield the wealthier part of the population from many of the consequences of the policies that they themselves support.
California still has an economy? Newsome can’t even do anything wrong right.
” The rate hike is going to mean a massive jobs exodus out of this state.”
Hopefully people too.
“what keeps it afloat?”
Money.
We’re drowning in it.
Not hard to make the argument that CA is now a serious threat to national security.
Too bad the Mexicans make it difficult for foreigns to buy land, or I’d put some money into a Baja port.
Maybe the Chicoms could build one there.

Let me ask you this. If you were in charge, would you mandate what California is mandating? If so, what would be your reason for doing so? If not, why not?
The 100+ ships waiting to be unloaded cannot even dock.
Here in LA they only have one crane working most of the time none at night because truckers not showing up due to the vax shots mandate.
Liberal leadership in action.
P
When the country is peacefully divided - California can be the Capitol City of PUS (Progressive United States)...
Capitalist bastards just chasing a profit should go to jail. Don't attack me. I don't know nuffin. Senior leaders of the present administration adhere to that perspective.
#35 They need to be fined more and also force the truckers to buy new trucks. That will fix the problem.
