Having attacked truckers, California now has a new target: In its endless pursuit of climate purity and a leftist utopia, California is determined to destroy its economy.

Posted on 12/01/2021 6:40:38 AM PST by SeekAndFind

One of my correspondents is an incredibly acute observer of the Democrats' non-stop assaults on the State of California, especially in the transportation industry.  He recently sent me an email about the fact that California didn't stop with its attack on trucking.  Instead, California Democrats are also going after the shipping industry.  He gave me permission to reproduce his email here:

Did you know that, in addition, to all the other wanton destruction in this state, such as the electric car mandate (for which no infrastructure is yet being built), Democrats have similarly deliberately destructive plans for shipping?  In 2027, they're going to require all ships in California ports to turn off their onboard generators and run only onshore power.

This is a big deal, costing tens of millions per dock, and, of course, it's going to require foreign-owned ships to spend hundreds of thousands, if not millions, per ship to make the conversions necessary to comport with the new law.

So if you're a ship owner and you're transporting goods either to or from the USA, and you think that California is geographically convenient, what you're doing right now (this minute) is planning alternate destinations.  You're going to land your ship in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, etc., or even build a new facility in Baja.

But the conflict doesn't stop there.  Even if a company has the margins to afford the new infrastructure, California utilities are massively hiking their rates and are set to do so even more aggressively in the future.  So even if you want to comply, there's more at stake than money.  The rate hike is going to mean a massive jobs exodus out of this state.

Now, imagine that you’re a company that provides certain critical infrastructure but you need electricity to operate and you’re regulated so you can’t hike prices. With doubled input costs wiping out your ability to stay solvent, then what? You shut down!

What about airplanes you Californian wackos?

New rule, nothing that is transported on a ship or truck can go into California. That included Amazon, Fed Ex and UPS.

Let them eat their own.

These companies are leaving because, having funded the Democrats' rise to power, they're not getting what they paid for.

I disagree, they are getting exactly what they Funded and Voted for, they just didn't read the Fine Print.

What keeps it afloat is the great weather, nice area and the rich in Silicon valley.
People, who moved in, when it was great state, and are still reluctant to leave.

But is shrinking now. First time they lost congressional seat.

RE: The question I have - given the ideological insanity and total leftist political monopoly of California, what keeps it afloat?

The author makes this observation:

And here’s the really messed up part. I know for certain that there are many companies — including woke companies — that don’t like this stuff and are calling Gavin Newsom’s office. Their calls are being answered because they’re donors to the party but they’re also being told to eff off because it’s going to happen whether they like it or not. These companies are leaving because, having funded the Democrats’ rise to power, they’re not getting what they paid for.

The Devil’s Dictionary defines an “honest politician” as “one who, once bought, stays bought.” Well, California politicians are not honest — and I’ll keep repeating until I’m blue in the face that this is not an accident or incompetence. What we’re seeing here is deliberate policy.

Democrats want to drive both jobs and conservatives out of this state so that they can turn it into the prototype for their “futureplan.” They envision a state populated only by serfs who stay home and whose only purpose is to vote for the party every couple of years.

In My view, the following things keep California afloat, but not for long:

1. It’s tradition of innovation and risk taking. It takes over a generation to destroy what several previous generations have built.

2. There are many parts of California that are SANE and traditional. That’s the part that keeps the state going. Take away the big cities of San Francisco, Los Angeles and Sacramento and California is still the California we used to know in the mid 20th century. I’ll even put in parts of San Diego as still salvageable ( but barely ).

3. The WEATHER. This is something that is God-given and will forever be to California’s advantage. Other than Hawaii, there is not a state in the union that has the almost perfect, temperate, weather that California has.

I thought the infrastructure bill is meant for things like this.

Yet there are still a majority that will allow this state, and likewise states, to drag the rest of the states into the hole.

Explain that to those of us who favor SECESSION.

Are there that many in this country with such low morals that they enjoy being abused?

I keep hearing California is going to destroy their economy. Then hear that California has a budget surplus of 76 billion dollars. That’s a pretty nice bunch of change.

“I thought the infrastructure bill is meant for things like this.”

I’m pretty sure its the SHIPS that have to be renovated to use only shore power. They run their on board generators because they weren’t built to run on shore power.
They’re talking about miles of wiring, junction boxes, fuse stations, and the terminals needed for the hook up to the shore based power lines.
Each shipping company will be responsible for renovating each of their ships. Massive costs that the consumer will pay for.

There is always momentum, the time delay between the bad policies and the economic collapse.

Inevitably the “experts” “never see it coming” and wonder “what happened”.

I once worked for a company that needed to work with equipment that ran on 240V 50-Hz power. For small gear, we had an electronic converter. When you start talking big equipment, you can use a motor-generator set with pulleys and a belt -- and for ship terminals, it would be cheaper for everyone if such a motor-generator set was on dry land instead of on every single ship.

The IBM System 370 computer systems used a motor-generator set to isolate the computer electronics from mains feeds. You just change the motor to match the power from the panel. (Frequency didn't matter to the generator side, because everything was converted to DC anyway.)
