Canadian officials announced Sunday that the omicron variant of Covid-19 has reached North America, with two cases appearing in the province of Ontario.
A joint statement by top Ontario health officials Christine Elliott and Kieran Moore said two people who had recently been in Nigeria have tested positive for the variant.
Contact tracing was being conducted to determine whether others in the country might be positive.
The health officials said their strategy is to stop as many omicron cases as possible from entering Canada.
"We continue to urge the federal government to take the necessary steps to mandate point-of-arrival testing for all travellers irrespective of where they’re coming from to further protect against the spread of this new variant," the pair said.
Ontario has focused rapid Covid-19 testing on travelers who have been to South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, according to the statement.
On Saturday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said told “Weekend TODAY” on Saturday that the variant could already be in the United States.

How do they know what variant these people are testing positive for?
A highly infective variant that confers immunity and only presents mild if any symptoms would be a godsend, not a problem.
Everything I’ve read indicates high infection capability but statistically insignificant lethality.
We’re literally chasing and tracking the common cold at this point.
How do they test for it if the genetic mutation just happened?
You know, I thought I had a forever list topper on things I don’t care about. I was all set in that department.

Chances are it is relatively mild - so far the news trickling in indicates that. So, Biden, a little belatedly, banned travel from some African countries. Do you hear the media’s outrage, calling Biden a racist for banning travel? No? How about that - Trump was called a racist for months for banning travel from China.
I have a mild case of whiteness myself. However, it is systemic, so there seems to be no cure.

It would indeed. It will at least weeks until we definitively have complete information on its infectivity and virulence. If it turns out to also be usually mild to people with comorbidities, it would be a MASSIVE godsend.
It’ll come south just in time to avoid Canada’s next winter and affect our 22 elections.
