GOP Cements Hold on Legislatures in Battleground States

Republicans are locking in newly gerrymandered maps for the legislatures in four battleground states that are set to secure the party’s control in the statehouse chambers over the next decade, fortifying the GOP against even the most sweeping potential Democratic wave elections.

In Texas, North Carolina, Ohio and Georgia, Republican state lawmakers have either created supermajorities capable of overriding a governor’s veto or whittled down competitive districts so significantly that Republicans’ advantage is virtually impenetrable — leaving voters in narrowly divided states powerless to change the leadership of their legislatures.

Although much of the attention on this year’s redistricting process has focused on gerrymandered congressional maps, the new maps being drafted in state legislatures have been just as distorted.

And statehouses have taken on towering importance: With the federal government gridlocked, these legislatures now serve as the country’s policy laboratory, crafting bills on abortion, guns, voting restrictions and other issues that shape the national political debate.

“This is not your Founding Fathers’ gerrymander,” said Chris Lamar, a senior legal counsel at the Campaign Legal Center who focuses on redistricting. “This is something more intense and durable and permanent.”

Just a reminder that the democrats controlled the redistricting after the censuses of 1930, 1940, 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980 and partially after 1990.

It's how the democrats kept control of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1930-1994 with only two brief breaks (1947-49 after the war and 1953-55 after the Eisenhower landslide).

But NOW they don't like gerrymandering (which has been done since the beginning of the republic. Elbridge Gerry signed the Declaration of Independence, was governor of MA from 1810-1812, vice-president under Madison and died in 1814).

Sour grapes!

They'll be EVEN MORE out of power after 2022.

This helps with voting fraud cleanups.

This is only “news” when it happens in Red states. When it happens in Blue states, you get a shrug....or a smile from the MSM.

It will only matter if we elect real Republicans and stop re-electing Assistant Democrats.

When the Republicans win a super-majority somewhere it is “undemocratic, unfair, a distortion”, and they are expected to compromise with the Democrats. When the Democrats have a razor-thin advantage, they “have a clear mandate” to push the most radical program and any trick to block opposition is okay.

It won't make a difference. The GOP won't do anything of note to deal with election fraud. They are dragging their feet in AZ, and accomplishing little in other states.

The Supreme Court has decided against courts overriding the state legislature in a recent redistricting dispute.

Please... Federal Law basically REQUIRES Gerrymandering..

You have to keep a districts minority population constant, if you change a districts shape in ANY WAY that affects this, you get sued...

Gerrymandering is nothing new, but the voting rights acts of the civil rights era, codified it as a reuirement.

Go clutch your pearls somewhere else.

Welcome to the party, pal, said every conservative in New England, New York, Illinois and the West Coast.

Prejudice much?

It was the voters, going against previously gerrymandered Democrat maps, who finally got rid of those leeches. It was closely divided because the Democrats had given themselves super safe seats. Now they actually have to campaign to keep those seats. I think the voters are probably pretty happy that the Democrats will now have to explain themselves to the people. You know, REAL democracy.

The terrible secret of Gerrymandering is that by making sure some racial groups can always get their person in, they make other districts so purely right wing that they do not even bother doing anything there.

This slowly enrages the conservatives and other factions until they will vote for anyone to throw out the bums. And whether anyone agrees, the strength of those racial groups in voting numbers has steadily decreased. People really do not like living in a Democrat controlled swamp.

I may not live to see it, but the breaking point for California is quickly approaching. Either a massive wave of everyone voting for change will occur, or certain areas of California will sue to secede and join a state close by.

The latter would be more encouraging had 2/3 of the populace not voted to ruin their own lives in that recall election.
