The jury has reached a verdict in the trial of Travis McMichael and his father, Gregory, and their neighbor, William "Roddie" Bryan.

The three men, who are white, each face charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment and criminal attempt to commit a felony in the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery, 25, who was Black, on Feb. 23, 2020, in Georgia.

They face up to life in prison if convicted of the more serious charges.

The nearly all-white jury, which has one Black member, began deliberating the men's fate on Tuesday.

If the Arbery was white the three guys would have walked
and if Kyle shot 3 black guys he’d be in jail right now.

“ Actually, I do know what I’m talking about. I go to Brunswick all the time. I’m able to get past the racial aspect of this case and see it for what it is. Apparently, some are not. That’s too bad. Good evening.”

You’re spot on with your analysis here. A lot of dog whistling going on with a few.

gleeaikin: True, kids are often fascinated with construction and excavation projects. Could be. Or could be he was looking for something to steal. We will never know.

sumuam: This incident happened around 1pm on a Sunday afternoon, so it was not at night. That does not mean Arbery wasn’t up to no good, of course.

I am also a woman. Nice to “see” you ladies here!

Yes, I’m aware this happened during the day, and he was was not a kid, he was 26 years old, and had a rap sheet, living at home doing nothing. He was caught on security cameras at night.

And, although it doesn’t catch him stealing, anything, there was no telling what else he was up to.

This was indeed a case of vigilante-ism.

It went South real quick because of their lack of training on the safe apprehension of any suspect.

STOP OR I WILL BLOW A HOLE THRU YOUR STOMACH!( sarc.)

All three of them should have stood down and called the police....no lives were at risk due to any activity by the victim.

Doesn't he have to be up to something in order to conduct the citizens arrest?

Get a job. At 26 years of age his mommma was calling the cops on him for taking her car. Still living at home doing nothing.

Considering he was 25 when he was killed that's a neat trick. But in terms of "Get a job...Still living at home doing nothing" where did Travis McMichael live and what did Travis McMichael do?

Would say two of these three have a good case for an appeal and considerable reduction of their sentences for lesser charges.

On what grounds?

Not sure if sentences have been handed down yet? Would maybe hold off further comment until I see what sentences are imposed. I feel that the other two are more into the accessory category and if the main sentence is not the max for murder then they will probably see further reductions. Will check on the timetable for this.

I agree with many here who said these guys were foolish and reckless to do things the way they did them. The context would be part of sentencing though, if Aubery was known to be participating in the thefts observed in the neighbourhood, there was at least some justification for seeking to detain him. I would feel differently about it if he was just a random citizen out jogging and the motivation was entirely along the lines of “here’s a black dude, let’s get him.”

Sentencing is in January I believe.

I feel that the other two are more into the accessory category and if the main sentence is not the max for murder then they will probably see further reductions.

If a murder is committed during the commission of a felony then all involved are liable to be charged for it. All were convicted on one or more of the murder charges and I believe the penalty is life without parole.

...if Aubery was known to be participating in the thefts observed in the neighbourhood, there was at least some justification for seeking to detain him.

The problem being there is no evidence that he was.

I would feel differently about it if he was just a random citizen out jogging and the motivation was entirely along the lines of “here’s a black dude, let’s get him.”

I don't think that motivation is all that far from their reason for doing what they did.

That may be, I can’t read minds well enough to say. Stepping back from this immediate case though, the problem across the nation (and we have this in Canada too although there’s less of a racial component) is that various trends have diluted the police response to theft, to the point where organized thieves feel a certain invulnerability to being caught or punished, and even if they are caught, punishments are well below deterrence levels. So there’s a growing perception among many property owners, especially in rural areas, that they need to take matters into their own hands or just put up with brazen thefts on a regular basis.

This is not just a result of the “defund the police” sentiment but has been building up for years because police really don’t have the resources (or perhaps the will) to deal with the theft situation, and it must demoralize them too when they see the revolving door aspects of any actual sentencing and jail time for thieves.

It would be a good platform for Trump to get into a different approach to the defund movement. Part of the defund movement is based on removing the police from social work involvements where perhaps there has been excessive force, and in any case police don’t want to have to do that kind of work (intervening in drug overdose situations for example), when they aren’t trained or equipped for it. So that part is perhaps legitimate, the part that gets into taking the police out of more urgent law enforcement work is of course a cover for revolutionary anarchy that the left would prefer to see. Defund movements should be limited to repurposing police back to their originally intended roles, not removing them from those. It might be more of a case of new funding for new organizations that could better cope with the law and order aspects of social work. We don’t really need police to be scrambling all over the place to handle drug addicts off their meds. There should be paramedics available for this, keep it all out of the legal system and in the medical care system where it belongs.

Sorry, a bit off topic for this thread, but I hope when the sentences do come down, the judge is relatively lenient with all three, there are some extenuating circumstances and I don’t think anyone would have been harmed if there hadn’t been prior bad acts.

What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?

Did the McMichaels have long rap sheets including resisting arrest? You think it’s okay for criminals just to prowl neighborhoods late at night? Have you ever heard of Cash Gernon and the other numerous horror stories that don’t make the mainstream news, or even the local news?

From what I understand, one guy didn’t even follow the guy down the street, the son did not use a weapon if he had one. I can see the Father being guilty of murder, but the other two it seems to me should be a lesser charge or conviction.

Ten years ago, early morning, my father had a home invasion, and was almost pushed down the stairs. He calls 911, “Put the gun down!”

NOPD shows up with bullhorns outside the house,

“Put the gun down!”
“Put the gun down!”

My grandmother was attacked by two “teens”, one afternoon after walking from the store with a bag of chips.

I once reported several. black, guys roaming around on my elderly neighbor’s property at night, and got nothing but attitude from two, black cops.

And it’s going to get worse with the current climate.

“From what I understand”

Hmmm, you had best go back and do some serious rereading cause your ‘understanding’ is not based on facts !

The SON had the gun.

The SON fired the three shots.

The FATHER had a handgun but did not shoot.

The guilty parties claimed that they accosted Arbery 4 to 5 times.

They are all three very, very guilty.
