Best Buy CEO says the trauma from rising retail thefts could force employees to quit
CNBC ^ | November 23, 2021 | Melissa Repko

Best Buy CEO Corie Barry said Tuesday that rising theft is hitting the company’s profits and could hurt employee retention at a time when the labor market is tight, especially in the retail industry.

She said the retailer has seen a noticeable jump in organized crime, with people coming to stores to steal consumer electronics — and in some cases, bringing a weapon such as a gun or a crowbar. She said the company will prioritize the safety of customers and employees, even if that means criminals are running out the door with thousands of dollars of merchandise.

“These are traumatic experiences, and they are happening more and more across the country,” she said on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street.”

Other retailers, including Kroger, CVS Health and Walgreens Boots Alliance, have also spoken about an increase in theft. Walgreens said it is even closing certain stores because of it.

To fight organized crime, Best Buy is locking up some of its merchandise, hiring security guards in certain locations and working with retail trade groups to look for solutions, Barry said on an earnings call.

She said San Francisco and other parts of California have been “hot spots” for the crimes but that there are problematic pockets across the country. In some cases, she said, more than a dozen people rush in a store and run out with goods. In other cases, it’s just a couple of people.

In the past week, two Nordstrom stores in California have been targeted by groups of looters in these types of “smash-and-grab” robberies.

Barry said she’s not sure why the crimes have increased but they are hard to stop. The retailer discourages its employees from confronting the thieves and in some cases, law enforcement prioritizes other kinds of crimes.

This the Democrats' America. One of the many causes of inflation may be increased theft. If a store loses x% of its merchandise to theft, honest people have to pay about x% more for the store to generate the same revenue. Thieves may frighten employees but also demoralize them. How would you like to work for just above the minimum wage and see thieves walk out the store with more than a days' pay?

“Best Buy is locking up some of its merchandise”

Heck, the Walmart in Mountain View, CA locks up most toiletries. You need to find a clerk with a key to open the bins to get laundry detergent. Then you move to the next aisle and have to find a different clerk to open the case to get some razor blades and shave cream. What used to be a five minute stroll to grab what you wanted now is 30 minutes of trying to find the right person with the right key to buy two items.

As much as I detest Bezos, it makes Amazon all the more attractive all the time.

How long will these stores remain in business?

Thanks, Democrats and Soros, for soft-on-crime making it impossible to shop locally.

I see another outcome as well.

If employee see that their employers are not going stop theft, then they may begin to help themselves to the goods (perhaps more than already is occurring.)

They are closing certain stores because of certain kinds of people who are looting and robbing.

In many areas, BB is closing stores because people are doing their shopping online. Serving as a brick and mortar showroom for online retailers is a loosing business plan. Thieves make it even worse.
