If it were a suicide, that should have been obvious when they found the remains of the body: gun in hand or nearby, same side of head with entry hole.

I’m always reminded of the account given by a NYC detective
about an X boxer who committed suicide in the Bowery.
He ended up shooting himself 7 times with a revolver.
This meant he had to reload at least once.
He kept missing vital spots...

The area his remains were found was flooded shortly before the remains were recovered. Bodies float, guns do not.
