To the editor: I was born and raised in England, and after many years in the U.S. I am still bewildered by how the 2nd Amendment has been manipulated by a powerful minority. ("Will Rittenhouse acquittal lead to more armed confrontations at protests?" Nov. 19)
The origins of this amendment, ratified in 1789, are clearly rooted in the desire to form state militias to frustrate any perceived overreach by a stronger federal government. The progenitor was the English Bill of Rights Act of 1689, which had a provision allowing the people to bear arms and possibly protect a newly formed Parliament against a misbehaving monarchy.
But somehow this original intent has morphed from allowing you to keep a slow-loading musket in your closet just in case a quickly formed militia is needed, to permitting a 17-year-old with an assault rifle slung around his neck to strut about a volatile riot area and shoot people he perceives as a threat.
I feel many in this country are so obsessed with guns and the 2nd Amendment that they cannot step back and see the mayhem they are causing.

Love the pic!
You came here because it is better than Britain. Now you want to change here to be like there. You are a dumba**.
What do you mean by “we” and “us,” Graham? You mention being born and raised in Britain, but you don’t mention your American citizenship, if you have it.
I love the same thing about people from "back east".
Somehow the original intent of the First Amendment has morphed from allowing you to print a few hundred newspapers at a time on a printing press to any idiot showing off his ignorance to the world on the Internet.
Graham, one big difference between the nation you left and the nation you have chosen to live in, is that unlike Britain, we have a written Constitution, which contains specific rules for how it can be amended.
As I understand it, pretty much anything in the unwritten British constitution can be changed by a vote of Parliament. The right to bear arms in the English Bill of Rights has pretty much vanished. So, while at the turn of the 20th century British subjects could possess weapons, that ‘right’ has been diminished to the point that even having a pointy knife is illegal. Right to not be compelled to incriminate oneself, well maybe not. Free speech? Not so much.
“Will Rittenhouse acquittal lead to more armed confrontations at protests?”
Setting cars on fire is not a protest. Threatening to kill a kid guarding those cars is not a protest. Grabbing his gun is not a protest. Chasing him down the street, throwing rocks at him, bashing him over the head, pointing a handgun at him is not a protest you freakin’ crimpet crumpet tea addicted bad teeth English imbecile
Yup!
“I love the same thing about people from “back east”.”
LOL!
I’m from “back east” 45 years ago, but have definitely taken to Colorado like a duck to water and have adopted all the best ways of Colorado and have no desire to move “back east” (or anywhere else for that matter)...
Go back fool.
“To the editor: I was born and raised in England, and “
Doesn’t Delta still fly to England? It’s ready when this Brit is, right?
Glad you’re here.
Instead of hanging out exclusively in his posh suburb, this toff needs to visit some of the less well-to-do areas around LA, like where some enterprising souls have set up small shops and businesses, only to see their life investments burned to the ground, in the course of a riot.
Then he might attain a glimmering of understanding as to why some of them have exercised their Constitutional right to purchase a gun so as to stand guard in order to protect their livelihood from being demolished - especially in situations where the police have been ordered to stand down.
God save us from moralistic limousine liberals.
I’m from ‘back east’ - the original Constitutional Carry State. Unaltered since the days of Ethan Allen & his Green Mountain Boys. We recognize everybody’s right to carry concealed, which is more than other’s do for us.
While all our responses to this fool are relevant and valid, they will of course never see the light of day at Leftist la Times.
Of Course our comments won’t make a dent in the Minds of these
Whining Wankers.
“are clearly “
Whenever some liberal starts saying “clearly” you know what follows is their narrow emotional view of something.
Rittenhouse is exactly what the 2ndA is about:
Faced with a practical insurrection, and no meaningful gov’t response, a citizen could step up at a moments notice and do his fair part to stop it.
Dang straight the Founding Fathers would have approved of a 17yo toting an AR15 to an outbreak of looting/vandalism/mayhem.
Woodland Hills is a rather nice area in the otherwise not so nice San Fernando Valley.
A place that received a huge influx of New Yorkers in the late 70’s. Figures this English liberal would feel at home there.
