DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — Traveling across Africa, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken saw firsthand the limits of America’s influence abroad.

Blinken confronted authoritarianism, growing threats from newly energized extremists, and persistent challenges posed by COVID-19 and climate change, all of which have stubbornly resisted various U.S. interventions.

And, nowhere on his three-nation tour last week — to Kenya, Nigeria and Senegal — was he able to escape obvious signs of the intense competition between the U.S. and China:...

Wonder if he saw all the land in Africa getting bought up by the Chinese for the huge deposits of minerals?

US reached a point when nobody trust us anymore.
European papers are full of articles about America’s decay and withdrawal from the world scene.
Let’s go Brandon! Good Job!

Probably not - Blinken would be looking for important things - like 'how are transexuals treated and do Africans use the right pronouns when talking to 'they'...

I had the pleasure recently of spending the afternoon with a man who has spent a lot of time in the rainforest of NE DR Congo.

He’s spent 30 years saving the endangered Okapi by helping create a 14,000 sq/ km reserve. Its the only place in the world that this beautiful animal lives..

10 years ago, MaiMai rebel killed 6 of his rangers and 14 okapi.

Now they have their own Congolese security force that don’t take any schiff from the poachers and gold miners that are forbidden there now

Funny seeing pictures of him at 6’6” surrounded by 5’ Mtubi pygmies.

It’s been fascinating reading about it.

Africa Always Wins.

Only if the game is played by western rules. I have a feeling China is going to deal a very different hand.

Kenya, Nigeria and Senegal. The USA has poured money down those African ratholes for decades. If China wants to spend its treasure there for the next thirty to forty years my reply is, “go right ahead.”

If you have the time someday, check out the Okapi Conservation Project

Like many people, until I met the man a few years ago, I had no idea what an Okapi is

Peaceful, elusive, beautiful creature whose only threat is leopards...and man.

Only a few thousand left in the world.

I only mention this because this man has spent a lifetime raising awareness of the need to save one of God’s wonderful creatures from extinction and awareness is the key

Oh, I already have! Fascinating! The pictures of the area look beautiful, too. They are amazing creatures. Love their stripey hindquarters, too. Very cool animals. I’m so grateful your friend worked to protect and preserve them, and other caring people as well. Thank you again for sharing!

Maybe so. It looks like Africa just sent a nice gift to Hong Kong, though:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10238113/New-Botswana-variant-32-horrific-mutations-evolved-Covid-strain-EVER.html

Okay, so it’s only one lousy guy (but hey those mutations are “horrific!” rolling my eyes). Yes, I’m joking around here.

But Africa does seem to have a way of winning. For fun I just googled “Africa always wins” and this popped up:

[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Good luck China. (Africa always wins) The Congolese are snorting cats.

Humans will do some dumb [censored] to achieve altered states...

Now they’re snorting crushed up catalytic converters in the Congo

https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/car-exhaust-drug-craze-alarms-congos-capital-2021-09-27/

Just the absurdity of it all may finally get to the Chinese.

Sounds like a good idea. They neglect to mention that the catalytic is mixed with various sedatives. Most likely what is causing the effect.

snorting the “bombe” mixture, with his friends.

Within minutes the trio are swaying slowly, scratching themselves in a catatonic state that experts in Congo say can cause users to stand motionless for hours, or sleep for days.

Agreed.

I am not picking on Africa, by the way. Most parts of the world we call “the Third World” have their bizarre and zany side. When I need a laugh, I sometimes have a look at the Phnom Penh Post police blotter. Some highly entertaining stuff there sometimes that puts Florida Man to shame (YMMV depending on the day):

https://m.phnompenhpost.com/police-blotter

Again, not picking on Cambodia, a beautiful country I love very much, and certainly not Cambodian people who are usually quite admirable (but have their bad eggs same as we do).

Happy Thanksgiving! Glad we all had a little fun on this thread. Reminds me of the good old days on FR.
